Buhari’s health has improved significantly – Embassy Source

Buhari’s health has improved significantly – Embassy Source
President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari’s health has improved significantly, although only his physicians can determine when he will return to Nigeria and to work, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.

“Oh yes; we thank God,” a source in the Nigeria High Commission in London, United Kingdom, told this newspaper when asked if the president’s health had improved substantially.

“He is doing very good; he is ok but his doctors will determine (when he will return).”

The official, who sees Mr. Buhari regularly, asked not to be named because he had no permission to discuss the president’s condition with journalists.

Mr. Buhari left the country for London on May 7 to continue with his medical treatment.

He had returned to Nigeria on March 10 after spending 51 days in the British capital during attending to his health.

Upon his return, the president said he “couldn’t recall being so sick since he was a young man, including in the military with its ups and downs.”

He also said he could not recall ever having blood transfusion before.

The president also hinted that he would return to the UK for further treatment.

“I’m feeling much better now. There may, however, be need for further follow up within some weeks,” Mr. Buhari had said while addressing the country.

However, as soon as he returned to the UK about two weeks ago, there were rumours that he had passed on.

An SMS announcing his death soon went viral. The text read, “Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has been confirmed dead in London where he was receiving medical attention….

The Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom told reporters plans are underway to transport the body of the late President to Abuja where final burial funeral rites will be held…Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is expected to be sworn in office as the substantive President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Government is yet to issue an official statement on the President’s demise. He was 74 years old.”

Our source expressed sadness that some Nigerians could wish the president dead, saying “(it is) sad that any human being will wish another dead.”

He continued, “It’s sad but God is all seeing and will always suffice and to Him we submit all our affairs. They have failed and will continue to fail.”

On the calls for Mr. Buhari’s resignation on the ground of poor health , the source said, “Well that’s their problem because it is God that gives power and takes it when He so wishes and not anybody else.”

When asked if the president’s health was now better than he left home, our source who sees Mr. Buhari regularly retorted, “Of course, yes.”

He said the president is largely stable and is able to regularly and promptly observe his five-time daily prayers.

When told that those calling for Mr. Buhari’s resignation believed he was too sick to ever govern again, the source said, “That’s the view of those arrogating God’s power to themselves and would surely regret it, Insha Allah.”

A 16-years old girl is lying critically ill with heavy bleeding coming from her private part after she was induced with a fourth abortion by a minister at Christ Embassy Church in Lagos.

Rev. Sunday Olisa who is a pastor of the Believers Love World Ministry popularly known as Christ Embassy Church, is currently trouble after being accused of alleged s*xual molestation of his 16-year-old housemaid which resulted in four pregnancies and abortions.

According to a report by P.M Express, the 16-years old orphan victim is lying critically ill with heavy bleeding coming from her private after she was induced with uncompleted abortion by his benefactor who is a minister at Christ Embassy Church Egbe branch in Lagos.

It was gathered that the incident happened at No. 6 Dolamo Street in Agodo Egbe in Ikotun area of Lagos where the pastor reside with the victim and family.

The operatives of the Nigerian Police at Area M Idimu Command, have already started manhunt for the cleric after he reportedly escaped mob action from the residents over the incident.

While speaking with a correspondent, the teenage victim who is in a hospital bed, narrated her ordeal and how he started living with Olisa through her uncle, George Aguba.

She said her mother was from Mali and married her father who was from Kwale in Delta State, adding that they were three sibling and their parents died when she was 10 and their uncle decided to take them back to Kwale before Olisa offered to assist and took her to his house.

She said ”when i was 10, Olisa will call me inside his bedroom where nobody was around and drugged me and r*ped me severally”.

She said it had continued and when she attempted to report to the leaders of the church, they shut her up and told her to endure and not complain because Olisa was sponsoring her education.

The victim revealed further that Olisa had taken her to different hospitals whenever he impregnated her for abortions and it has been like for the past six years, adding that she was frustrated and her movement regimented and was not allowed to meet her relations including her uncle, George.

On why she was in the hospital, the helpless victim, said Olisa impregnated her and wanted to cover it up and took her to a doctor where they carried out an abortion and brought her home.

She said after the abortion which was the 4th, she started having heavy bleed and she became afraid and came out from and street and raised alarm before she collapsed and taken to a hospital where the doctors have been battling to save her life.

She said the doctor said the abortion was not completed which caused the heavy bleeding coming from her private, adding that she does not know her fate if she will survive and discharged from the hospital because he has no contact again with his uncle who did not know what she was passing through.

When a reporter went to the resident where Olisa lives, the residents confirmed the incident and rained curses on Olisa.

As at the time of filing this report, there is no officials response from the Church, but some of the members expressed shock over the matter and was helping the police in their investigations.

Face Of Manchester Bomber Revealed

Face Of Manchester Bomber Revealed

This is the Brit-born suicide bomber who killed 22 innocent people and maimed 64 others in the Manchester Arena nail bomb massacre.

Sick terrorist Salman Abedi, 22, was unmasked as Theresa May raised the UK threat level to “critical” for the first time in 10 years with up to 3,800 soldiers on the streets because another terror attack could be “imminent”.

The Home Secretary Amber Rudd has this morning said it’s “likely” Abedi “was not doing this on his own” as police arrested three more men in South Manchester in connection with the incident.

Abedi had secret jihadi training during family trips to Syria and spooks fear he was not acting alone when he carried out the atrocity that ISIS has claimed responsibility for.

Today French interior minister Gerard Collomb has said the Manchester bomber is believed to have travelled to Syria and had “proven” links with the Islamic State terror group.

Mr Collomb said: “He was a British national of Libyan origin, he grew up in Great Britain.

“All of a sudden he travelled to Libya and then most likely to Syria, became radicalised and decided to commit this attack.”

The monster – who was killed when he detonated a bomb at Ariana Grande’s gig on Monday night that killed concert-goers as young as eight – was born and grew up in Britain.

Abedi’s family originally hail from Libya and he is thought to have visited the North African country – also a haven for ISIS fighters – regularly in recent years.

Sources said there were fears Abedi may have taken advantage of the conflict to make the simple journey across the Med to Syria without alerting the British authorities.

One revealed: “His potential ties to Syria now very much forms one line of inquiry.”

Cops are also probing whether Abedi, who is believed to have been known to MI5, acted alone or as part of a larger extremist network to carry out the worst terror attack Britain has seen since the 7/7 London bombings.

And Met Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley admitted there were “gaps in our knowledge” about Abedi and the PM said it was possible a “wider group of individuals” could have been involved in the “cowardly” attack.

Shock as Pregnant Beautician Beats 8-year-old Housemaid to Death in Lagos

Shock as Pregnant Beautician Beats 8-year-old Housemaid to Death in Lagos
File photo: A woman beating and assaulting a little baby

A pregnant mother has landed herself in serious trouble after she allegedly battered her housemaid to death in Lagos.

Policemen in Lagos state have arrested a Lagos beautician identified only as Oby for allegedly beating her eight-year-old maid, Miracle Edegwu, to death in the Isolo area of the city.

According to Punch, the mother-of-two was allegedly planning with some people to dispose of the corpse of the maid after she died when her neighbours raised alarm and reported her to the police.

Speaking about the incident, a neighbour revealed that the Oby was fond of beating Miracle and would insult anyone who confronted her over the matter.

He said, “She is a beautician and has two children and she is heavily pregnant with her third child. Her husband was deported from Libya before he travelled again to Angola, where he is now based.

“She brought the victim and another girl by name Chinacherem, from their village in Anambra State some years ago. They were formerly going to school before she stopped them.

“However, anytime I visit their house, she was always beating this particular girl. Whenever people intervened, she would tell them to go away because she brought the girl from the village and it was none of their business.

“She usually maltreated the two girls and would wake them up as early as 4.30am to start working. She beats them for the least provocation.

“Early Saturday, she descended on Miracle again and beat her till she gave up. She called some people to help her in disposing of her corpse.

They were about taking the body out when people challenged them. The people she brought quickly ran away.”

The case has been reported to officials of the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender.

An official of the agency, said some family members have taken away Chinacherem, 12, in order to stop her from testifying against her boss.

She said, “We gathered that Oby told Chinacherem that when she is queried, she should tell people that she (Chinacherem) and the victim fought and she collapsed and died.

After the girl told the crowd that, she quickly added that it was what her madam asked her to say.

“But the woman has confessed to the police that she killed the girl. When we went to the station, we were prevented from talking to her, but they confirmed it was a case of homicide.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.”

The Director of OPD, Mrs. Olubukola Salami, said the agency would follow the case to ensure justice was served.

She said, “The girl’s life could have been saved if people raised the alarm early enough and that is why we always say if you see something, say something.

There is no room for child abuse in Lagos State and we will ensure due diligence is done in this matter.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the incident, adding that the victim’s corpse had been deposited in the Isolo General Hospital for autopsy.

PDP will lose Anambra Governorship Election: They Are Divided – Anambra PDP House Of Reps Member

PDP will lose Anambra Governorship Election: They Are Divided – Anambra PDP House Of Reps Member

PT: Are you saying there is every possibility you may dump the PDP?

Nwankwo: I haven’t said there is every possibility and I haven’t said there is no possibility.

I said that if remaining in PDP will make my people achieve their political objectives, the reason why I am here, then I’ll remain in PDP. But if it is threatened by my continued stay in the PDP then of course…. It is only a tree that will hear that it is going to be cut down that will stay in one place.

I will be guided by the political objectives of my people. I will also be seriously guided by which party stands the best chance to make things happen for my people.

PT: The Anambra governorship election is just around the corner. How bright are the chances of the

PDP given the leadership crisis at the centre? Can the PDP upstage Willie Obiano in the contest?

Nwankwo: It is a very simple thing.

Failure and success are by choice and the two alternatives are before PDP. If they choose success, they must come together. If a house is divided against itself, it cannot stand. If they (PDP) want to fail, they will be divided as they are and if they remain divided, they have chosen to fail.

If they decide to come together and stay under one umbrella which is their logo then they become a united front.

So, they should mobilize the people and bring them together and tell them ‘you will do our bidding, not that of any individual.  Anything other than that, I see very thick clouds.

PT: Some say you Anambrarians have too much money and that is why you don’t agree, politically. Can you provide some insight into this claim?

Nwankwo: To play politics in Anambra state is very stressful because of the nature of human resource capital in that state.

The society is republican and there is a very high political awareness and also individuals are not people that can be pushed around. I think that is more like it other than money.

Money is playing its own role but I’m looking at the nature of Anambra society, the people are very enlightened. You can’t find more than 30 per cent of the voters to be illiterates and unenlightened.

They look into your eyes and tell you what they want to tell you.

There are so many “big fishes” or “big trees” but no matter how mighty a tree is, if it doesn’t take care, it will fall. That is the lesson they don’t know. Most of the time they keep fighting each other.

But my advice to them is that Anambra would be a better state than it is now if they can achieve a political consensus, if they can be driven by a shared vision to be the greatest state in Nigeria. It is one state that has the lowest level of poverty in Nigeria.

I’m not saying they are the richest in the federation. You can rarely find a typical village in Anambra state where there are no basic amenities.

It is as a result of the nature of the society, the blessing God has deposited upon the people and the state.

I will advise them to look inwards to do some kind of introspective analysis and not to push their luck too far and take their blessings for granted.

They should come together as people united by passion and vision then build the strongest state in Nigeria.

I know you will talk about Lagos but I will also tell you that a good percentage of the productivity in Lagos is coming from Anambra State.

PT: Do you intend to run as governor of Anambra State?

Nwankwo: If God finds me probable and worthy, I will be a willing tool, I will be very glad to serve my people but I wouldn’t be desperate about it.

I will wait for my own time. When the time and tide favours my choice, no man can stop it.

As for now, I’m a legislator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that is the job I am seriously committed to doing for now.

UPDATED: Another container load of arms intercepted in Lagos

UPDATED: Another container load of arms intercepted in Lagos

The container intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service on Tuesday at the Tin Can Island port, Lagos, was loaded with 440 arms and ammunition of various sizes and designs, the Nigeria Customs Service has said.

Monday Abue, Zonal Commander, Tin Can Island Command, said the container with registration number PONU 210024/1 was shipped from Turkey and routed through the Lagos port.

Speaking after the seizure on Tuesday, Mr. Abue said the consignment was declared as Plaster of Paris by the importer, adding that it was intercepted by the Customs based on intelligence report and that investigations were ongoing to uncover the shipper.

According to Mr. Abue, the intercepted 440 pieces of pump action rifles were manufactured in the United States of America and Italy.

“They are pump action rifles of various designs and also the single barrel device that you are familiar with.

“We have arrested one defendant but due to security reasons, we don’t want to make it public for now because such information could hamper investigations which are still ongoing,” he added.

A source had earlier informed PREMIUM TIMES that the container was impounded at the Ports & Cargo Terminal, inside the Tin Can Island port.

“The truck carrying the container came out from Ports & Cargo gate before it was stopped at the second gate by Customs officials,” the source added.

But Ports & Cargo Terminal responded Tuesday, through its parent company, Sifax Group, denying that the container was found at its terminal.

The company stated that the arms-laden container was intercepted at a port access road near its terminal, and not within its premises.

“Our findings have shown that the said container was released from another terminal and was headed for an Off-Dock terminal before it was intercepted by the Nigerian Customs Service on the port access road close to our terminal” Muyiwa Akande, Corporate Affairs Manager, said.

“Ports & Cargo Terminal doesn’t own the access road and how we are linked to this beats our imagination.”

Also, in a statement on Tuesday, Uche Ejesieme, Customs Spokesperson at the Tin Can Island Command, said the impounded rifles included 100 pieces of black tornado single barrel rifles, 75 pieces of silver magnum single barrel rifles, 50 pieces of altar pump action rifles, 215 pieces of black single barrel rifles among other accessories.

Tuesday’s discovery came barely four months after the Customs intercepted 661 pieces of pump-action rifles from China, concealed with steel doors and other merchandise goods, which came in through Lagos port.

How a pastor I trusted defrauded me of N918million — Atiku’s wife

How a pastor I trusted defrauded me of N918million — Atiku’s wife

Titi Atiku, wife of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, on Tuesday told an Ikeja High Court that she trusted a business partner who allegedly defrauded her of N918 million because of his status as a pastor.
“I thought that the first defendant, being a pastor, he will not defraud me.

“I thought that he was being genuine with me during our business dealings,” Mrs Abubakar said while being cross examined in the ongoing fraud trial against a pastor, Nsikakabasi Akpan-Jacobs, Abdulmalik Ibrahim and Dana Motors Ltd.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had slammed the accused with a 15- count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing and fraudulent conversion of property worth N918 million belonging to THA Shipping Maritime Services Ltd.

Amos Ibe, the defence counsel to Mr. Akpan-Jacobs, while cross examining Mrs Abubakar, questioned why she used different monikers in company documents relating to the fraud.

“Before I start cross examining you Ma, should I refer to you as Your Excellency?

“Why was the name Florence Doregos used in the petition from the EFCC which is exhibit one, as well as other fake names in documents you used to transact business with the first defendant?,” Mr. Ibe queried.

Replying, Titi said: “I am Her Excellency forever, it was under my instruction and direction that the petition was written.

“My name is Florence Doregos, my name is Titi Amina Atiku Abubakar, the Mrs in the petition is a mistake made by my Lawyer.

“Florence is my name and it was easy for me to use Doregos while I was in state service.

“The name of my biological father is Dorego Albert, we are from Ilesha but I have cousins who are from the Republic of Benin.

“I can choose Doregos, I can choose Albert as my surname, they are all my names, even Dino Melaye, his name is Daniel but he calls himself Dino.

“I can twist my name anyhow I want.”

Responding to Mr. Ibe’s questions about her identity when she married the former Vice-President, she said “I married my husband at the Ikoyi Registry in 1971.

“I was a Christian before I married my husband, Angelina is my baptismal name, Florence is my confirmation name.

“When I got married to my husband, I converted to Islam and I have been called Amina Titilayo, Titilayo was what I was called at home,” she said.

. Ibe, however, still questioning Mrs Atiku’s real identity, told her that a book written in honour of her husband titled ‘Atiku: The Story of Atiku Abubakar,’ claimed that she was from a Local Government Area in Adamawa.

I am from my husband’s Local Government Area by virtue of marriage.

“Whether I’m from the moon o, that’s not the matter on ground,” she said.

Mr. Ibe sought to tender the book written in honour of the former Vice-President to the court but it was rejected by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye.

“The document does not fall under the definition of a public document under the Evidence Act, it is a private document, it is therefore rejected,” Justice Ipaye said.

NAN reports that THA Shipping Maritime Services Ltd, a company created in 2000 belonged to Mrs Atiku, Akpan-Jacobs and Fred Holmes.

She was allegedly to be the majority shareholder with 49 per cent shares, while Holmes and Akpan-Jacobs each had 25 per cent shares.

Mr. Akpan-Jacobs, who also doubled as the company’s Managing Director and Secretary, was accused to have gone to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and altered the share holding in his favour and forging the company’s board resolution.

He allegedly under the new share arrangement allotted 70 per cent shares to himself and 15 per cent shares each to Titi and Holmes.

According to the EFCC, welding a fraudulent shareholding power, Mr. Akpan-Jacobs sold a property belonging to the company to Dana Motors Nigeria Ltd for N918 million.

The property is located at Plot C63 A, Amuwo-Odofin Commercial Layout along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos.

During Tuesday’s proceedings, the defence disputed Mrs Abubakar’s claims that she invested over

N1.2billion in the business transactions with the defendants.

“Your petition stated that you invested over N200 million and in another document it stated that you invested over N1.2billion, which fact is correct?

“Do you have accounting reports, did you hire an auditor to look at the accounts, how did you arrive at N1.2billion?

“N200 million is the money I spent in building the bonded terminal, by the time it was ready, it was worth N1.2billion.

“Akpan-Jacobs never gave me any records, I was in the state service, I did not get any auditor, Akpan-Jacobs has the evidence of the money I spent, I didn’t know that our business transactions will become a court case,” she said.

Mrs Abubakar, while in the witness box, accused Mr. Akpan-Jacobs of using her company property as a collateral for a bank loan that he sought when he wanted to run for the Akwa-Ibom governorship election.

“He used my bonded terminal as a collateral for a loan when he wanted to run for governorship of Akwa-Ibom, when he couldn’t refund the money the bank wanted to acquire the bonded terminal, he sold it to Dana Motors Ltd,

“I was the largest shareholder of THA Shipping Company with 49% of shares, my German partner Fred Holmes had 26% and Akpan-Jacobs has 25%.

“Akpan-Jacobs never contributed a dime to the company, I couldn’t be involved in all the documentation because I was in service.

“He did the registration and promotion of the company, he brought all the papers to me at the villa to sign, he later fraudulently changed the shareholding powers of my shipping company to favour himself.

“He gave me 15 percent, Holmes 15 percent and he took 70 percent shareholding power for himself.

“I never entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with him to sell the company, that is why I’m in court, when he couldn’t repay the loan, he sold the company to Dana Motors Ltd.

“When the fraud happened, we initially agreed to settle out of court, but instead of settling, he went to sell the cranes and the company, giving the EFCC N16 million which I received, “ she said.

Mr. Akpan-Jacobs’ lawyer asked the court to cancel the next court date slated for May 24 for continuation of the trial on the grounds of his Ill health.

“My Lord, I ask for the previously adjourned date of May 24 to be vacated because I am currently battling ill health,” Mr. Ibe said.

Babatunde Sonoiki, the EFCC counsel however, opposed Mr. Ibe’s request.

“There have been four adjournments at the cost of the plaintiff, she flies in at great risk to her safety from Abuja for every court date and she is supposed to be helping to take care of a newborn of one of her children.

“We have another witness who has travelled on four occasions for 15 hours by road from Yola and the case keeps being adjourned, I will like to request for a cost of N750,000 from the defendants to cover the financial expenses of the plaintiff,” he said.

Justice Ipaye granted a cost of N100,000 against Mr. Akpan-Jacobs and adjourned the case until July 5 and 6 for continuation of trial.(NAN)

N2.1bn: EFCC Seizes 18 Houses from Dasuki's Associate

N2.1bn: EFCC Seizes 18 Houses from Dasuki's Associate
file copy
The leading anti-graft body in Nigeria, EFCC has confiscated several houses owned by a close associate of the embattled former NSA, Dasuki.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has seized 18 houses in an estate allegedly belonging to Alhaji Aliyu Usman, an associate of the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

Usman as well as two companies linked to him - Leaderettehe Nigeria Limited and Nordeen Global Resources – were among 300 others listed as persons who allegedly received contracts from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The EFCC said Musa allegedly diverted N897m he received from the ONSA fund and allegedly  used it to construct the estate.

The inscription, ‘EFCC, Keep Off!’ was seen on the 18 terrace houses in the estate which is located at Mbora District, Abuja.

Usman also allegedly used part of the money to buy a three bed-roomed flat at OAU Quarters Wuse 2 Abuja

The EFCC said, “The EFCC is investigating the involvement of Aliyu Usman, who is linked with Leaderettehe Nigeria Limited and Nordeen Global Resources for their involvement in the monumental fraud that allegedly took place in the Office of the National Security Adviser during the regime of the embattled Col. Sambo Dasuki.

“The two companies allegedly received about N897m from the arms deal funds from ONSA and diverted part of the money in the construction of an estate with 18 unit blocks of flats at Mbora District Abuja and another for the purchase of a three bed-roomed flat at OAU Quarters Wise II Abuja.”

A committee set up to probe contracts awarded by the NSA from 2011 to 2015 had last year indicted more than 300 companies and prominent citizens including serving and retired officers of the armed forces.

Mallam Garba Shehu, a spokesperson for President Muhammadu Buhari, had said in March last year that over N7bn had been recovered so far from the indicted companies and individuals.

Another N41bn is to be refunded by the indicted companies while further investigation by the EFCC had been ordered to determine whether another N75bn should be recovered from some of the companies for unexecuted or partially executed contracts.

The statement said the committee further established that one of the indicted companies, Societe D’Equipment International, was overpaid to the tune of €7.9m and $7.09m.

The committee discovered that there was a total disregard of key provisions of the Public Procurement Act in the award of contracts by ONSA.

“Several contractors were apparently overpaid, while others were given full upfront payments contrary to their contract terms and agreements in force,” Garba had said.

Over 30 persons and companies are under prosecution by the EFCC for their alleged role in the scam while a few others have since fled the country.

Suspected Accomplice to Deadly Terrorist Attack in Manchester That Killed 22 People Caught

Suspected Accomplice to Deadly Terrorist Attack in Manchester That Killed 22 People Caught

Police men in the United Kingdom have arrested a suspected accomplice to the fatal bomb attack which killed about 22 people in Manchester.

British authorities believe they know the identity of the suicide bomber who killed 22 people including children at a pop concert, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Tuesday, as police said they had arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the attack.

May said the “cowardice of the attacker was met by the bravery of the emergency services and the people of Manchester” in remarks given at Downing Street, her London office, following a meeting of the government’s emergency committee.

“This was among the worst terrorist incidents we have ever experienced in the United Kingdom,” she said.

“And although it is not the first time Manchester has suffered in this way, it is the worst attack the city has experienced and the worst-ever to hit the north of England.”

Greater Manchester Police said they arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of links to the attack, while a second man was detained at the city’s Arndale shopping centre but was “not currently believed to be connected to last night’s attacks.”

The shopping centre was briefly evacuated on Tuesday morning, reports said.

May said she planned to visit Manchester on Tuesday, while Andy Burnham, the city’s mayor, said a vigil was planned for the victims in Manchester’s central Albert Square at 6 pm (1700 GMT).

The White House said US President Donald Trump spoke to May by telephone to “offer condolences and support” on behalf of the United States.

Leaders from across the world sent condolences after the explosion late Monday, which came as thousands of people, many of them teenagers, were leaving Manchester Arena at the end of a concert by pop singer Ariana Grande.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and all those affected by this atrocity,” Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said. “I am heartbroken for all.”

“The city of Manchester has exceptionally close ties with our country and I extend the solidarity of the Irish government and all our people to those affected across Britain,” Kenny said in a statement.

The police said they believed a lone male attacker died in the attack after he detonated a home-made device in the foyer of the Manchester Arena.

“We have been treating this as a terrorist incident and we believe at this stage the attack last night was conducted by one man,” Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said.

“The priority is to establish whether he was acting alone or as part of a network,” Hopkins said.

“We believe the attacker was carrying an improvised explosive device which he detonated causing this atrocity.”

At least 59 people were injured in the attack in the northern English city.

Pop star Grande, 23, said she was “broken” by the news of the deaths.

“From the bottom of my heart I am so, so sorry,” she wrote on Twitter. “I don’t have words.”

Trump, on a visit to the Middle East, called those behind the attack “evil losers”.

“I won’t call them monsters, because they would like that term,” said Trump, adding that so many “young, beautiful” people has lost their lives.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull also remarked how young many of the victims could be.

“This attack is especially vile, especially criminal, especially horrific – because it appears to have been deliberately directed at teenagers,” he said in a statement.

Italy’s government asked all the schools in the country to observe a minute’s silence at noon (1000 GMT) to commemorate the victims of the attack.

Paris, the site of numerous terrorist attacks in recent years, will again turn off the lights of the Eiffel Tower later as a mark of respect while flags were flying at half mast at many locations across Britain and Europe, including at the European Commission in Brussels

Europe has been rocked by a string of Islamist terrorist attacks in the last three years, with five people being killed in London in March after a man drove a car at pedestrians and then stabbed a police officer.

Veteran James Bond Actor, Roger Moore is Dead

Veteran James Bond Actor, Roger Moore is Dead

Popular James Bond actor, Sir Roger Moore has died in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer.

Actor Sir Roger Moore, best known for playing James Bond, has died aged 89, his family has announced. He played the famous spy in seven Bond films including 'Live and Let Die' and the 'Spy Who Loved Me'.

Sir Roger's family confirmed the news on Twitter, saying he had died after "a short but brave battle with cancer".

The statement, from his children, read: "Thank you Pops for being you, and being so very special to so many people."

"With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated," they said in a Twitter post.

Sir Roger took the character of James Bond in a more humorous direction than his predecessor Sean Connery. Sir Roger's Bond was calm and suave - a smooth operator who could seemingly get himself out of a tricky situation with ease.

The veteran star, who died in Switzerland, will have a private funeral in Monaco in accordance with his wishes, they added.

"The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone," read the statement from Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian.

"Our thoughts must now turn to supporting Kristina [his wife] at this difficult time."

Sir Roger Moore, who has died aged 89, brought a lighter touch to the role of James Bond, the role for which he was most famous.

Out went the harder, crueller edge of Sean Connery's 007 to be succeeded by sardonic humour and the inevitable raised eyebrow.

He eventually became the longest-serving actor in the role, his seven Bond films becoming the most commercially successful of the franchise.

His tenure in the role also showcased an array of implausible gadgets and a host of new characters, designed to flesh out Ian Fleming's original plots.

The statement added: "We know our own love and admiration will be magnified many times over, across the world, by people who knew him for his films, his television shows and his passionate work for UNICEF which he considered to be his greatest achievement.

Along with his famous Bond role, Moore was also known for 1960s TV series The Persuaders and The Saint.

Sir Roger was also well known for his humanitarian work - he was introduced to Unicef by the late Audrey Hepburn and was appointed as a goodwill ambassador in 1991.

Supreme Court Strikes Out Ali Modu Sheriff's Application

Supreme Court Strikes Out Ali Modu Sheriff's Application

Ali Modu Sheriff, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party has lost at the Supreme Court.

Ali Modu Sheriff, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party

The Supreme Court has dismissed an application filed by a factional leader of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, Ali-Modu Sheriff, asking the court not to hear a motion by his challenger, Ahmed Makarfi.

Mr. Sheriff had asked the court to refuse hearing on the application filed by Mr. Makarfi, challenging the February 17 judgement of the Appeal Court in Port Harcourt which made Mr. Sheriff leader of the PDP.

At the opening of the hearing on Monday, Mr. Sheriff’s lawyer, Akin Olujimi, said the application was an abuse of court process because Mr. Makarfi ought to have requested the leave of court before making the application.

Mr. Olujimi prayed the court to dismiss the application.

Responding, Mr. Makarfi’s lawyer, Wole Olanikpekun, prayed the court to disregard the argument of Mr. Olujimi, describing them as baseless.

In a short ruling on the application, a five-member panel led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, said the application by Mr. Makarfi was considered valid since it complied with the rules of the Supreme Court.

Mr. Onnoghen said according to the Supreme Court rules, an application challenging a decision of a lower court ought to have come within three months after the ruling of the lower court.

He said the apex court had taken note of the fact that the case was decided at the lower court in February, while the motion at the Supreme Court was filed less than three months after the ruling by the lower court.

He therefore gave a unanimous ruling in favour of the Makarfi faction, and awarded an unstated cost against the faction led by Mr. Sheriff, Premium Times reports.[NAN]

Drama as Jilted Woman Kidnaps Her Ex-boyfriend at Gunpoint on His Wedding Day

A woman who was jilted by the lover has done the unthinkable by abducting her former boyfriend at gunpoint on his wedding day.

Hundreds of guests watched in horror when a girl accompanied by a group of armed men arrived at a marriage pandal and abducted the groom before his wedding, according to TimesOfIndia.

The groom identified as Ashok Yadav, a native of Mohanpurwa in Banda district, was getting married to a girl hailing from Maudaha town of Hamirpur district on Monday night (May 15), when he was allegedly abducted on gun-point by his ex-beloved and her armed aides hailing from Banda district. The groom could not be recovered till late Tuesday night.

The bride and groom had just gone through the `tika' rituals when Ashok's ex girlfriend, accompanied by half-a-dozen armed men arrived at the scene.

"The armed men took Ashok at gunpoint and threatened him to accompany them. After bundling him on the rear seat of a car, they sped away," a police official said.

"We were witnessing `tika' rituals when six men armed with pistols asked Ashok to get down from the stage.

We thought they are criminals demanding money but they didn't ask anything and took Ashok with them," an eyewitness said.

Ashok, who works as a compounder, lives in Mohanpurwa locality of Banda. He had an affair with a local girl, but he broke up with her early last year.

Ashoks family then engaged him with a girl hailing from Maudaha town of Hamirpur district.

The ex-lover, went to Ashok's home and even threatened the family that she will commit suicide if they married him to another girl.

European Union Bans Nigerian Airline, Med-View from Entering UK Airspace

European Union Bans Nigerian Airline, Med-View from Entering UK Airspace

The European Commission has added Medview air line to its EU air safety list thereby banning the airline from its airspace.

Barely 18 months after commencing the Lagos-London route, the lone Nigerian carrier on the European route, Med-View Airline has been barred from entering European airspace.

The European Union cited safety reasons for barring of the airline from entering the Europe airspace.

European Commission said that its aircraft, Boeing 767 that operates to Gatwick London is not airworthy and advised the carrier to change the aircraft or suspend flight operations to its airspace until it is able to provide another aircraft for its operations.

A statement released by the commission on Tuesday said that a total of 181 airlines have been banned from EU skies.

“Today the European Commission updated the EU air safety list, the list of non-European airlines that do not meet international safety standards, and are therefore subject to an operating ban or operational restrictions within the European Union,” the statement read.

“Following today’s update, all airlines certified in Benin and Mozambique are cleared from the list, following further improvements to the aviation safety situation in these countries.

“On the other hand, the airlines Med-View (Nigeria), Mustique Airways (St. Vincent and the Grenadines), Aviation Company Urga (Ukraine) and Air Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe) were added to the list due to unaddressed safety deficiencies that were detected by the European aviation safety agency during the assessment for a third country operator authorisation.”

Additional information available on the EU transport and mobility website explained that airlines subjected to operating ban can operate in the EU using leased aircraft of another airline.

“Airlines subjected to an operating ban could be permitted to operate within the European Union by using wet-leased aircraft of an airline which is not subject to an operating ban, provided that the relevant safety standards are complied with.

“The aircraft being used in such operations could be branded as if it belonged to the fleet of the banned airline.”

It would be recalled that Med-View commenced the Lagos-Gatwick route on November 20, 2015, with fanfare.

The airline commenced the three weekly frequencies to London with a Boeing 767 aircraft but changed the aircraft to Boeing 747 last year when the Boeing 767 went on maintenance check abroad.

However, when the aircraft returned from checks abroad, the management deployed the aircraft to the European country again and moved the Boeing 747 for its annual hajj operations.

Besides, due to lack of passengers in recent time, the airline reduced its frequencies to two weekly and last December had issues with passengers whose luggage were left behind in London.

The carrier last year was enlisted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and on Wednesday, held its first Annual General Meeting (AGM) where investors expressed displeasure over the management of the airline, and expressed fear that the airline may go the way of others if the management didn’t change its style of leadership.

The anti-graft agency arraigned the duo of Buhari Fannami and Ba-Kura Abdullahi before MT Salihu, justice of the federal high court Maiduguri, on two separate counts of giving false information, on Tuesday.

According to Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC spokesman, Fannamit misled the agency with information about illegally acquired monies purportedly buried at the residence of one Ba’a Lawan.

UK govt reacts to coup rumours in Nigeria

UK govt reacts to coup rumours in Nigeria

The British government has warned against “non-democratic” change of government in Nigeria, amid speculations about military coup as concerns grow over President Muhammadu Buhari’s health.

“The British government believes that democracy is actually critical in Nigeria,” the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright, said on Wednesday.

“There are elections. If you’re not happy with your leaders then you should change your leadership through the democratic process and through elections.”

The High Commissioner spoke on the sidelines of an event held in Abuja to formally launch a new report on corruption in Nigeria which was put together by UK policy think-tank, Chatham House.

His comments came a day after the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, warned of undue interactions between Army officers and politicians, as concerns mount over Mr. Buhari’s health.

The president traveled to London last week for medical treatment for an undisclosed ailment, just over a month after returning to Nigeria from an extended medical leave abroad.

“Any officer or soldier of Nigerian Army found to be hobnobbing with such elements or engaged in unprofessional conducts such as politicking would have himself or herself to blame,” the Army said in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Sani Usman, a brigadier general.

Although the statement cited “political reasons” as grounds for the purported discussions between some military officers and politicians, it was silent on the specific discussions that took place or the individuals involved.

But earlier in the week, military sources had informed PREMIUM TIMES that the Army leadership was unsettled by growing speculation of possible coup de’tat by officers within its rank and file.

PREMIUM TIMES further learnt that Mr. Buratai, a lieutenant general, had raised the issue with Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and promised to nip it in the bud.

The alleged plot might also have informed Mr. Buratai’s decision to shake up Army formations with random transfer of senior officers last week.

The UK envoy, Mr. Arkwright, while recognising the rights of citizens to agitate for a more tolerable living condition, said the United Kingdom would only encourage a change of power through the ballot box.

“Our position is very clear: we stand for democracy, we stand for the democratic process and we stand for change —if that is what the people themselves want,” the diplomat said. “That has to be a choice the people make and not a choice that is imposed upon them.”

Discrimination Against The Igbos:Senate summons Amaechi over South-East exclusion from beneficiaries of $5.8bn loan request for standard rail lines

Discrimination Against The Igbos:Senate summons Amaechi over South-East exclusion from beneficiaries of $5.8bn loan request for standard rail lines

The Senate, Tuesday, resolved to summon the Transport Minister, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi over the exclusion of South-East from the beneficiaries of the  $5.8bn loan request from China Exim Bank  by the Federal Government for the construction of Standard Guage lines across the country.

The Federal Government is now requesting the loan which will be repaid by all regions of the country including the South-East to fund a standard guage lines running from Lagos-Kano, Kano-Kaduna, Lagos-Ibadan, and Lagos Calabar.

This is a deviation from the original plan that included the Eastern section that links the four zones of the South-South, South-East, North-Central and North-East and Key cities such as Port-Harcourt, Aba, Enugu, Makurdi, Lafia, Gudi, Jos, Bauchi and Maiduguri.

Raising a motion at the floor of the senate against approving the loan over South-East exclusion, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, (PDP Abia South), urged the Senate to reject approving the loan until all regions were carried along in the utilisation of the loan.

Abaribe in his motion had queried with dismay why the government wanted to take such a huge loan that would benefit all other regions apart from the South East.

He said the loan would be paid back by all section of the country and as such, all section should be taken into consideration.

“There is railway master plan developed by the Ministry of Transport and of which such plan has not been referred to in the current borrowing plan.

“For the railway project to have a meaningful impact on the development of the country, it should cover all parts of Nigeria.

“Therefore the exclusion of the Eastern section that links the four zones of the South-South, South-East, North-Central and North-East and the Key cities such as Port-Harcourt, Aba, Enugu, Makurdi, Lafia, Gudi, Jos, Bauchi and Maiduguri is inexplicable,” he said.

However, the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki noted that the leadership of the National Assembly had already identified the flaw and had taken it up with the executive.

Saraki said the executive had taken note of the issues and had agreed to reach a resolution with the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debt on the matter.

The Senate, however, upheld the argument of Senator Abaribe that there was no reason why the South East should be excluded from the rail project for which the loan was sought.

The Senate, further, okayed the motion to invite the minister of transportation to explain why the Eastern line was excluded from the plan.

The minister is expected to appear before the committee on Local and Foreign Debts to explain the exclusion.

The Deputy President of the Senate also supported the motion stressing that the whole country would pay for the loan and as such the loan should be beneficial to all.

Ex-Governor Of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime has a case to answer – EFCC

Ex-Governor Of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime has a case to answer – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday maintained that former governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime, has a case to answer in relation to the N450million campaign funds he allegedly received from ex- Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison- Madueke.

Chime, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for All Progressives Congress (APC), had declared at a news conference that he has no case to answer as far as the campaign money was concerned.

But EFCC insisted that Chime is not yet out of the woods in the alleged misappropriation of the fund.

Briefing journalists at the Enugu Press Centre, EFCC Head of Operations South East, Mr. Johnson Babalola, said Chime was far from being free from the commission’s hook, adding that the ex-governor “is still under our investigation.”

Babalola said one Rita Mba and several other persons mentioned in the election campaign fund saga are also under investigation.

“Chime is still under investigation. Criminal cases don’t have expiry date. The case is still not closed. Rita has the right to allege that we have compromised.

I want to tell you that she too is still under investigation and I don’t want to say more than that about the case,” Babalola said.

How Babangida Sent a Bag of Money to Buhari in 1988 - Biographer Reveals

Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and President Muhammadu Buhari

Excerpts from Buhari's biography shows he was apparently bribed by Babangida with a lump-sum as he left prison custody to enable him kick-start his life again.

Controversies over the contents of President Muhammadu Buhari’s authorized biography are not going to be over soon.

Allegations of money exchanging hands between the president and the man who toppled him in 1985, General Ibrahim Babangida, are in the book titled “Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria.”

According to accounts on page 35 of the book, after General Buhari was released from detention in 1988, IBB sent him “a bag of money” which he (Buhari) “distributed to the poor.”

“Buhari had married Safinatu Yusuf in 1971, and they had five children, a son and four daughters. In the end, Buhari and Safinatu would be divorced in 1988.

He would marry Aisha Halilu in 1989, after his release from detention. They would also have five children.

“After the death of his mother in December 1988, Buhari was released and travelled to Daura for the mourning. When he arrived in Daura, he found his farm much as he had left it.

His senior brother (the father of Mamman Daura), along with the Barden Daura, had managed the cattle, sheep, and horses in his absence, although a number of cattle had been sold off to pay for feed during the drought.

“Buhari was still in debt to the bank for building his home. Yet now he had no income.

At that time there was no program to provide retirement funds for former heads of state. Babangida agreed to a policy to pay Buhari his military pension, a modest 1,643 naira per month for ten years.

“Babangida had originally sent Buhari “a bag of money,” but Buhari refused it and had it distributed to the poor.

Buhari had negotiated his pension funds with Air Vice Marshal (rtd) Hamza Abdullahi, a military governor of Kano, who acted on behalf of Babangida,” the biographer wrote.

The book also contained details of how Buhari was arrested by two soldiers in his bedroom in consummation of the August 27, 1985 coup.

“By late spring of 1985, the number of “big men” going to jail had increased. The tribunals were open and transparent.

Buhari was insistent that the courts do their duty without fear or favor. Two-thirds of those arrested and charged came from the north, that is, from the NPN base.

“As noted above, by the summer of 1985, splits were beginning to appear within the top military circle.

Babangida had been part of every coup in Nigeria since 1967 and began to consider his options. He was very close to General Aliyu Gusau, who was in charge of security.

As the summer unfolded, Buhari became aware that Gusau was trading in import licenses on the side. Gusau was retired by Buhari, a move that apparently upset Babangida.

“Buhari confronted Babangida and asked what he would have done in the matter of Gusau’s retirement. Babangida agreed that Gusau had to have been retired.

A few days later, however, there was a knock on Buhari’s bedroom door.

He opened the door and was met by two soldiers, who told him, “General Buhari, sir, you are under arrest.” Buhari would spend the next three years in detention in Benin. But at least he was alive.

“The question has arisen subsequently as to whether Buhari knew about the countercoup in advance. Given his “appreciation” of complex situation, it is argued by some, how could he not have known?

Life in Detention

“Buhari was housed in a well-guarded small bungalow in Benin City.

He was not harassed by soldiers or cut off from all communication. He was given a small television set that could pick up one or two channels, plus daily newspapers and he was provided three meals a day.

He was allowed visitors, but only on the specific authorization of Babangida

In most cases, his visitors were members of his family, although because they lived in the north of the country, and Benin was in Edo State in the south, travel was a problem.

“Buhari’s daily routine was much the same every day.

He would get up around 5a.m. for Muslim prayers, and then go back to bed; get up again around 8 or 9a.m. and have breakfast; read; have lunch; rest; exercise; pray; eat dinner; read; and sleep.

The only exercise he could get was to jog around outside the house.

“He read not only newspapers, but also novels, history books and the Qur’an. His chief uncertainty in detention was when he would be released.

If Babangida had wanted to kill him, he realized, he would be dead by now. Hence, he had to endure not so much anxiety as a continual sense of boredom.

"He was used to a Spartan lifestyle and so he did not miss material comforts But he did miss his family, and he felt acutely the loss of his freedom. He had absolutely no intention of ever re-entering Nigerian political life.

“In the end, after more than three years in detention, it was the death of Buhari’s mother in December 1988 that led to his release.

News of her death generated public pressure on Babangida to let Buhari return to Daura.

Babangida acceded to the pressure, allowing Buhari to go back to Daura, where he would have to start his new life as a retired major general,” the author wrote.

Speaking with Daily Sun, a family source, who witnessed the pastor’s killing from a distance, said as soon as they arrived the farm, the gunmen emerged from the bush, surrounded them before asking the deceased if he knew anybody called Ngozi, who worked in his company.

He said: “My Oga said no and turned to us to ask if there was anybody like that. We said no. The assailant claimed that our oga was owing the said Ngozi salary.

One of them brought out a cutlass and hit me on the back, asking me to disappear. Others and I ran in different directions.

They held our oga down. We heard our Oga shouting, after which three gunshots were fired. Everywhere became quiet thereafter.

“When I waited for a ling time without hearing anything, I sneaked to where they held our oga and behold, his butchered body was lying at the centre of the road.

We called his brothers, who came and we rushed him to the hospital, because we noticed that he was breathing very slowly. On getting to the hospital, he was confirmed dead.

We then took his corpse to the state CID to make entry and they directed us to Ubakala police station, where we made entry before taking his corpse to mortuary.

“The whole scenario looked like he wanted to run before they hewed him down, then dealt several machete blows on him, probably, to make sure that he was dead.

They came with a black Toyota car. They were about six in number, two came out from the bush and the other four came with the vehicle.

Revealed: Why Guests Were Not Served Soft Drinks at Ex-President Ibrahim Babangida's Daughter's Wedding

Here are three powerful lessons from former military president's daughter, Halimat Babangida's traditional wedding, including why soft drinks were not served to guests.

The new couple, Halimat & Lawal

We reported over the past weekend that Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (rtd) gave out his last daughter, Halimat, in marriage to Gombe state businessman, Alhaji Auwal Lawal Abdullahi, in a high society traditional wedding held at the Hilltop Villa of the former military president in Minna, the Niger State capital.

The 3-day event drew attention for many reasons.

While many focused on the number of private jets, hired or owned, that landed on the Minna airport tamac just for the wedding, many others were more interested in the politics of people from different political camps sitting together on a table and even exchanging banters.

According to an exclusive report by Abuja Reporters, here are three lessons that was deducted from the wedding.

1. It was the first time in a wedding of that magnitude that bottled drinks were not served. Neither Coca cola nor Pepsi or other soft drink products were served during the event.

The development left many wondering why would a wedding of that calibre not have drinks like Sprite, Fanta, Coke, Pepsi or even Malt drinks.

It was gathered that the financiers set out to put forward a message that there are many more local drinks that are beneficial to the body than coca cola or Pepsi products or even the malt products.

Guests were served with chilled zobo, various forms of Kunu, there were also straight juice drinks, like pineapple, ginger, and some mixed together in cocktails.

For those who liked to experiment with new things, they must have been overwhelmed by the number of drinks that were seemed in gourds.

2. It didn’t end there, the drinks were complemented with food and snacks.

At the cultural night, which ordinarily should have featured dancing and singing for the bride, about eight states spread across Nigeria were chosen to present food and drinks which they served to people.

Both the people who had invitation cards and those who didn’t, had access to these meals as there was more than enough to go round.

Indeed, at a point, people from some of the states were begging to have guests taste what they had.

Local snacks especially from Niger State was the order of the day. In normal climes, you would enter a wedding reception and see cup cakes or piece of cake neatly packaged for guests.

This was not so. The fine packages contained Donkuwa, kulikuli, kokoro and Gurundi all Nupe delicacies.

Maryam Babangida, the matriarch of the family was champion of women empowerment. The whole idea of encouraging local meals and drinks was to bring back what she lived for.

Most of the local snacks and drinks were products from women. If we all patronise our local meals and drinks, more women would be empowered and we would also be more healthy.

3. Another takeaway from the wedding was the fact that one way or the other, four of Africa’s richest somehow see IBB as their mentors and were there.

Governments come and go, but there is no doubt that the IBB era helped in moulding some entrepreneurs who are today billionaires.

They were not contractors but people who saw opportunities in the Nigerian economy and seized them. Mike Adenuga, Folorunso Alakija and Aliko Dangote are a few of these men.

They were not contractors. They were entrepreneurs who helped in opening up the economy.
