A German opposition lawmaker on Sunday suggested that authorities could subsidise paid sex for patients requiring nursing care.
The spokeswoman of the Green Party on care policy, Elisabeth Scharfenberg, told Welt am Sonntag newspaper that she could imagine authorities “financing sexual assistance”.
According to Scharfenberg, sex with prostitutes will be funded by the government for those in need of sexual assistance but can’t afford it.
“The local authorities could advise on the available options and provide grants.”
She said doctors should have the right to issue the free prescriptions to their patients for sex workers.
The proposal is modeled on a system already in place in the Netherlands, under which applicants must prove a medical need and show they can’t otherwise pay for a sex worker.
Individuals can receive state grants to pay for the service if they can provide a medical note stating that they are unable to get sexual satisfaction in any other way and prove that they cannot afford to bear the costs themselves.
In Germany, a growing number of prostitutes are offering their services as sexual assistants in nursing homes, where the ‘assistance’ will consist of a massage, sexual touching or full intercourse.
Wilhelm Frieling-Sonnenberg, a professor who specialises in researching medical care, finds the idea “contemptuous towards human dignity” and a way to placate troublesome patients.
In turn, sexual advisor for nursing homes Vanessa del Rae says that prostitutes are a “blessing” for people in need of care.
Prostitution has been legal in Germany since 2002.
