Two students of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA, drowned yesterday evening while reportedly taking selfie pictures on a canoe inside a river in the town, Daily Post reports.

The two students who were both on the 300-level, were identified as Olabiyi Emmanuel from the Agriculture and Environmental Engineering, and Olukun Babatunde Alex from the department of Project Management Technology.

Busted: Drug Kingpin Who Used Plastic Surgery to Evade Capture for 30 Years Finally Nabbed

Busted: Drug Kingpin Who Used Plastic Surgery to Evade Capture for 30 Years Finally Nabbed... See How He Was Caught
Luiz Carlos da Rocha
A drug kingpin considered to be one of Brazil's most notorious ever, has been nabbed after evading police for up to 30 years.

Brazilian police have captured a notorious drug kingpin who used plastic surgery to evade capture for almost 30 years, authorities say.

According to BBC, Luiz Carlos da Rocha - nicknamed "White Head" - is believed to be the leader of a massive cocaine empire in South America.

Federal police said sentences handed down to Rocha amount to more than 50 years of prison time.

Police said he was "a criminal who lived discreetly and in the shadows".

Rocha was arrested in Sorriso, in the western state of Mato Grosso, on Saturday, a police statement said.

The drug kingpin had been living in the city under the assumed name Vitor Luiz de Moraes. Agents compared old known photos of Rocha to the images of the new suspect, "and concluded that Luiz Carlos da Rocha and Vitor Luiz are the same person".

Suitcases full of cash, a gun and other objects belonging to Rocha were found

Brazilian police said his organisation was known to be violent, making use of armed escorts, armoured cars, and heavy weapons.

It produced cocaine in Bolivia, Peru and Colombia, before shipping it through an elaborate logistics system to Europe and the United States.

Luiz Carlos da Rocha is also accused of being one of the main providers of cocaine to criminal organisations within Brazil, in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

In total, police estimate his empire produced some five tonnes of cocaine each month.

Operation Spectrum - the name given to the sting - also seized some $10m (£7.6m) worth of criminal assets, including farms, other real estate, luxury vehicles and aircraft.

Officers believe Rocha's wealth is closer to $100m, and say they will seek to seize the rest of his assets in the second phase of the operation.

Shocker: See The Nigerian Medical Doctor Who Shot 7 people killing 1 Inside a New York Hospital

Shocker: See The Nigerian Medical Doctor Who Shot 7 people killing 1 Inside a New York Hospital
Henry Bello

A Nigerian doctor in the United States is being made to pay for his criminal acts after being found out to have killed one and injured others.

Henry Bello, a disgruntled Nigerian medical doctor, on Friday, barged into the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Centre, New York, United States with an armed rifle, killing one and injuring six others, NBC News reports.

According to the New York Police Department, Bello also opened fire on himself and died in the process.

The suspect, aged 45, was found dead on the 17th floor of the facility, the city police told NBC News.

The gunfire was first reported at 3pm on the eighth floor of the hospital and it was immediately placed on lockdown as police launched a floor-by-floor search for the armed intruder.

“This would appear, preliminarily, to be a former employee dressed in a hospital jacket similar to what you would see a doctor wearing, who is familiar with the hospital, which makes the situation a lot more problematic,” officials said, adding that Bello had a rifle, possibly an AR-15 type assault rifle, and had previously worked at the hospital.

Just before 4pm, the Assistant Commissioner for Communication for the NYPD, Peter Donald, announced the search for the suspect was over.

“One shooter is deceased at the hospital,” he said.

Before killing himself, Bello tried to start a fire on the 16th floor that was doused by the hospital’s sprinkler system, a senior official with direct knowledge of the incident said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced in a tweet later that the situation was not an act of terrorism.

Billionaire Kidnapper: Security Operatives In Dilemma Over Evans, Say He Is Capable Of Organising Jailbreak

Billionaire Kidnapper: Security Operatives In Dilemma Over Evans, Say He Is Capable Of Organising Jailbreak
Evans

Security operatives are in serious dilemma over the suspected billionaire kidnapper, Evans who they say can organise a jailbreak.

According to a Saturday Vanguard report, there are fears among security operatives that the notorious kidnap kingpin, Mr. Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, aka, Evans, who was arrested recently by the Police for coordinating several high-profile kidnappings and armed robbery could stage an escape from prison if remanded in prison custody.

It was learnt that should Evans be remanded in Prison, he would pose a security threat to the nation given his sophistication and network.

Top security agents, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard explained that since the Police were yet to trace all the monies and properties Evans acquired during his 20-year reign as a high profile kidnapper, his stay in prison would avail him the opportunity to reorganize himself and set up a new gang.

Again, the police are still investigating to nab his accomplices and may not be in a hurry to charge him to court now.

They have a court order to keep him up to three months before he could face prosecution.

A source within the security community told SaturdayVanguard that several high profile criminals, who made huge sums money before their arrest were treated preferentially by prison officials, who they alleged gave them easy access to cell phones and internet connections.

The source said: “High-profile criminals enjoy VIP treatments in prison custody because they have money.

We have learned that these suspects usually pay the warders to be detained in cells that are classified as VIP, and they would have access to their phones as well as the internet.

These suspects don’t usually feel like they are in prison custody because they enjoy unlimited access to visitors anytime.

“Since his money has not been recovered completely because we had information that he has hotels in Ghana and South Africa, it will be wrong to send him to prison."

He is also said to have auto spare parts outlets in Ghana and some other Africa countries. People working for him are numerous and the Police are yet to arrest all of them.

If he is remanded in prison with these assets unrecovered, Evans could rule any prison. Evans, can be in prison and easily recruit men outside, radicalise them, buy them arms and send them out for operations.

‘’Evans could enjoy the security of the prison and unleash terror on the society. We have seen a lot of criminals like him and they have done same

“We have had several cases like that in the past.

We had the case of Henry Chibueze, alias Vampire, who kidnapped and killed several persons and was arrested in 2015 by the Department of State Security Service, DSS.

While in prison, Vampire sponsored several groups, who carried out kidnappings on his behalf.

Having raised enough money he staged an escape from the prison while he was being taken to court. Luckily for us, he was gunned down, a few weeks after his escape.

There were also other cases in Abuja and Port Harcourt Rivers State, recently.

A suspect in Kuje Prison was identified as the mastermind of several fraud cases where he would send members of his syndicate to buy goods and pay with fake bank alerts.

“When members of the syndicate were arrested, they confessed that their leader was serving in Kuje Prison. One of the cases in Port Harcourt saw a detainee operating a massive kidnap gang.

The kidnapper had organized several kidnappings before members of his gang were apprehended and he was exposed.”

Similarly, Police sources also intimated Saturday Vanguard that the Nnewi -born suspect who received millions of dollars as ransom from his victims after abducting and detaining them for months, was said to have given vivid details of how his gang carried out operations which led to the death of many policemen across the country.

This was after he denied being involved in such operations when asked by Saturday Vanguard during an interview. He only admitted taking part in just three bullion van robberies during his reign.

Deadly operation in Oyo

However, sources said his story changed on June 26, 2017, when a Deputy Commissioner of Police currently serving at the Rivers State Police Command, Mr. Felix Vwamhi, contacted the Intelligence Response Team handling his case and informed them that while he served as  the Area Commander in Charge of Oyo Town, Oyo State, in 2010, Evans and his gang members carried out multiple bank robberies.

He added that a few days after the operation, Evans, and members of his gang went to rob more other banks in Rivers and Abia States.

It was gathered that Evans, was  caught on Close Circuit Camera, CCTV, stationed at one of the banks clutching an AK-47 rifle, after he and his group stormed the bank and two others, located at Oyo Junction, off Iwo Road.

He was said to have apprehended the branch manager of the bank immediately he gained access to the bank and forced him to lead him into the vault where large sums of money were carted away.

It was learned that the gang stormed the bank from a village in Iwo Town, where they had camped a night before the operation.

They invaded the bank at 10: am on May 20, 2017, after snatching three vehicles from the Oyo/ Road and abducting its occupants.

They were said to have attempted to move into Oyo Town where they intended to rob more banks, but they were stopped by Armoured Personnel Carriers.

Sources at the IRT disclosed that the Oyo Area Commander at that time secured the service of an informant based in Lagos State, adding that the CCTV at the bank was obtained.

The informant, who was said to have identified Evans, while he was seen stuffing bundles of dollars into a bag from the CCTV footage, warned that the gang had concluded plans to carry out more bank robberies in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, and Aba.

Two days after that operation, Evans and his men were also sported in Port-Harcourt, where they raided some banks from where they moved to Aba and raided more banks.

Sharing of loot in Lagos

Saturday Vanguard gathered that Evans and other commanders in the group, who were identified as directors, shared their loot at a location in Lagos State.

Evans and other top members of the gang reportedly kept the foreign currencies stolen from the banks.

A few days after sharing their loot, a member of the gang, who specialized in opening bank security doors, was arrested at his residence in Ijesha, Lagos State.

He was shown the footage where he saw himself breaking one of the doors to the banks through the aid of the informant.

His arrest soon led to the arrest of several members of their gang, but Evans, who was the police prime target, managed to escape to Ghana.

It was learned that while policemen from the Oyo Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, stormed Lagos, having gotten information that Evans was spotted in a nightclub, in Ikeja, he scaled the club’s fence, abandoned his vehicle and absconded.

Denies Godogodo

It was further gathered that following this revelation, the IRT confronted Evans with the claims that he may have worked with the late notorious armed robbery czar known as Abiodun Ogunjobi, a.k.a Godogodo, during his reign in the South West.

Godogodo was reputed to have killed over 50 policemen and snatched their rifles.

However, Evans reportedly admitted taking part in the 2010 Oyo bank robberies but denied ever working with Godogodo.

He explained that he did not know the names of all the people he worked with during his robbery escapades.

He said: “I don’t know all the people I carried out robbery operations with because I don’t share my contacts with everybody so that when they are caught, they won’t mention my name to the Police.

At the time we went for that Oyo robbery, my gang was made up of mainly Igbo boys and traders from Ladipo Spare Part Market.

We were working mainly at Port-Harcourt and other parts of the South East, but it was one of our friends known as Paul, who brought us to Oyo for the bank robbery.

They were the people who knew the terrain very well.

My friend Paul came with some Yoruba boys and we stayed in a village very close Oyo Town.

I don’t know the name of that town, but in the morning before we went for the operation, we snatched three vehicles and we used them for the operation.

Before we got to the bank, we had some of our men close to monitor movements of security operatives around the bank.

And they had strict instructions to take out any security operative that may stand on our way. I don’t know if any policeman was killed during the operation.

I was just a driver. I wasn’t carrying any gun. We went to Port-Harcourt after the Oyo robbervans and his gang members carried out multiple bank robberies.

He added that a few days after the operation, Evans, and memy and the Yoruba boys didn’t follow us. ND was the person who brought the information on that operation, while Nwanaba, brought the Aba operation.

We shared the Oyo robbery loot with the Yoruba boys there in Oyo State before we left for the East.

But, what we did in that operation was that every man should settle himself with what he got. After our Port-Harcourt  and Aba operations, we came to Lagos and shared our loots at Ikeja area.

Soon after, the police started arresting my gang members. I don’t know how they infiltrated our gang but I was forced to flee to Ghana.”

Arms deals: EFCC seizes ex-Chief of Army Staff’s N4bn estate

Arms deals: EFCC seizes ex-Chief of Army Staff’s N4bn estate

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has seized an estate, allegedly valued at over N4 billion from a former Chief of Army Staff.

The estate, which has been placed under Interim Asset Forfeiture, was confiscated on account of the ongoing probe of the ex-Army Chief over $2.1 billion arms deals.

Prior to the seizure, the Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement (CADEP) had traced about N2 billion meant for the purchase of vehicles for the Nigerian Army, to the accounts of five children of the former Army chief.

There were indications that the said accounts were yet to be de-frozen at press time.

The Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment, headed by AVM JON Ode, had submitted its third interim report to President Muhammadu Buhari, leading to the shortlisting of the 54 people to be probed.

Apart from two ex-Army Chiefs, others recommended for probe are 16 other retired and serving Army officers, 12 serving and retired public officers and 24 Chief Executive Officers of companies involved in the procurement of equipment.

According to findings made by our correspondent, the EFCC decided to invoke Interim Asset Forfeiture Clause pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

A search by our correspondent revealed that the estate is sited between Jabi and Life Camp.

When our correspondent visited the site at 11am on Friday, the EFCC’s ‘Keep Off’ sign was already pasted on the estate.

The anti-graft agency also indicated that the estate was “under investigation.”

The estate contains more than 30 duplexes built to taste.

A reliable source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The ex-Army Chief was referred to the EFCC based on the report of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment, headed by AVM JON Ode.

“We are still investigating the ex-Army Chief and he will soon be interrogated. But in line with our modus operandi, we have been able to trace his suspicious assets which we have attached under Interim Asset Forfeiture.

“In this case of the ex-Chief of Army Staff, his children and friends were used as fronts for money laundering.

“We have traced many suspicious accounts linked with the ex-Army boss. Most of these accounts have been frozen.

“Some of our operatives have been working on documents in the Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA) on evidence relating to these scandalous procurement deals.”

Responding to a question, the source said: “The estate under forfeiture is so massive and valued at about N4 billion.”

Section 7 of the EFCC Act says: “The commission has power to (a) cause any investigations to be conducted as to whether any person, corporate body or organisation has committed any offence under this Act or other law relating to economic and financial crimes.

“(b) Cause investigations to be conducted into the properties of any person if it appears to the commission that the person’s lifestyle and extent of the properties are not justified by his source of income.”

The Presidential Committee had established that the ex-Chief of Army Staff has a case to answer.

The report of the panel said in part: “The Committee further established that between March 2011 and December 2013, two companies exclusively procured various types of Toyota and Mitsubishi vehicles worth over N2, 000,000,000.00 for the Nigerian Army without any competitive bidding.

“Most of the contracts awarded to the companies were also split, awarded on the same date or within a short space of time at costs and mobilization higher than the prescribed thresholds.

“For instance, on 15 Feb 13, the 2 companies were awarded contracts worth N260, 000.000.00 and N315, 000,000.00 respectively for supplies of various vehicles.

The Nigerian Army could not justify the exclusive selection of these vendors against other renowned distributors of same brands of vehicles procured.

“More seriously, the Committee found no credible evidence of delivery of the vehicles by the 2 companies as there were no receipt vouchers but only unauthenticated delivery notes, invoices and waybills that were purportedly used for the deliveries.

“Nevertheless, the vendors were fully paid based on job completion certificate authenticated by the then Chief of Logistics.

The payments were also made without deduction of Withholding Tax (WHT). Furthermore, analyses of the various banks accounts of the two companies showed transfers to individuals.

The report said the individuals were five children of the ex-Chief of Army Staff and one other front.

“Thus, the Committee recommends further investigation to determine delivery of the vehicles and relationship of funds beneficiaries with the former COAS and the two companies,” the report added.

The panel also discovered that “between May 2014 and March 2015, the ONSA mandated CBN to release various sums totaling $386,954,000.00 to three companies for ‘procurement of technical equipment’, without tying the money to particular items of procurement.

“Thus, the allotment of the fund was left at the discretion of the vendor without input or consultation with ONSA or the Nigerian Army.

“Furthermore, some of the funds transferred preceded the formalization of contracts with the Nigerian Army.

There was also no evidence of any contract to justify the payments made by ONSA to the companies. Consequently, it had been difficult for the ONSA, the Nigerian Army and the companies to reconcile the accounts vis-a-vis the equipment delivered.”

The panel also discovered that 42 units of Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) which were rejected by Iraq were later sold to Nigeria to fight Boko Haram insurgents.

It claimed that some of the APCs were either expired or unsuitable, leading to loss of lives.

It added: “The Committee observed that one of the new equipment procured for the Nigerian Army from Ukraine was BTR-4E APC. However, according to the Ukraine’s State Enterprise Lviv Armour Repair Plant, the designers of the equipment, ‘some of the products sold to Nigeria in 2014 were actually among 42 units designed for Iraq which subsequently rejected them due to poor performance rating.’

“The Nigerian Army did not also undertake the mandatory pre-shipment inspections provided for in the contract agreements.

Instead, the NA deployed an Infantry officer, who lacked the technical knowledge to assess the capabilities and shortcomings of the equipment, to oversee the shipment of the items for the Nigerian Army from Ukraine.

“Additionally, the 2 weeks training availed the technicians and operators was inadequate for them to comprehend the technical workings of the newly introduced equipment.

“The Committee’s interactions with the field operators revealed that although the platforms and ammunition procured were deployed for the NE operations, some of them were aged or expired, lacked spares and prone to breakdown without immediate recovery equipment.

“Therefore, failure to carry out pre-shipment inspection and inadequate training resulted in procurement of some unreliable equipment that reduced the capacity of the Nigerian Army in the North East Operations and resulted in the loss of lives and equipment.”

Tragic! Weed-smoking 'Boy' Hacks Bishop to Death in Front of Congregation Members for Preaching 'Too Loud'

Tragic! Weed-smoking 'Boy' Hacks Bishop to Death in Front of Congregation Members for Preaching 'Too Loud'
Bishop Joel Mwendwa

A church bishop has reportedly lost his life after a young boy hacked him to death as he was preaching on the road with his congregation members.

A Kenyan bishop was hacked to death in Juba, South Sudan on June 24 for preaching ‘too loudly’ during his morning prayers, according to a report by the Sudan Tribune.

It was gathered that Bishop Joel Mwendwa was leading a congregation of Kenyans when his assailant described by police as “a boy” and a neighbour of his church along Bilpam Road in Munuki estate, Juba, killed him using a panga during the 6.30am prayers.

South Sudan police spokesman, Brigadier General Daniel Justin, confirmed the incident.

“As the congregation was going on with morning prayers, a man in the neighbourhood of the church walked to the front of the church with a machete and attacked the bishop.

He slashed him several times before he fell down.

The suspect then ran to a nearby house from where police smoked him out.

He confessed to committing the offence, claiming the bishop has been a nuisance to them with his morning prayers,” said Brigadier Daniel, adding that the boy will be arraigned in court to answer to murder charges.

Bishop Mwendwa, whose church had a congregation of over 3,000 faithful, hails from Wote in Makueni County and has been preaching in South Sudan for over 10 years.

He leaves behind a widow and two children.

According to the Sudan Tribune, witnesses said the boy often smoked illicit substances and that the two started having differences when the bishop travelled back from Kenya only to find that he (boy) had stolen the church’s bamboo fence.

Tabitha Mutero, the director and organising secretary of Kenyans in South Sudan told The Nairobian that, “It is unfortunate the man of God was killed doing what he knows best.

We condemn the act and appeal to the government through the ministry of Foreign Affairs to follow up on this matter with the South Sudan government”.

Mutero asked the government in Juba to take care of foreigners as it takes care of its people and complained that since January, 90 Kenyan drivers and conductors in addition to businessmen have lost their lives in South Sudan.

“In Kenya, we live with them as brothers and sisters, yet many Kenyans face untold challenges in the hands of the South Sudanese in their country,” she said.

Court makes final decision on Certificate Forgery Suit Against Senator Uba

Court makes final decision on Certificate Forgery Suit Against Senator Uba
Senator Andy Uba

All Progressives Congress chieftain, Andy Uba has been cleared off certificate forgery case by the court of law after being dragged by a concerned person.

An Abuja High Court sitting in Apo, Gudu District, on Friday, dismissed a certificate forgery suit filed by one Uchenna Nnadi against Sen. Andy Uba.

Justice Valentine Ashi ‎said the law says that he who asserts must prove; and that the plaintiff had failed to lead the court with further evidence.

Ashi said that the ‎plaintiff should have investigated and gotten his facts from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which cleared the defendant as being eligible for elections.

He said the plaintiff should have also conducted checks at Union Secondary School, Awkunanu, Enugu State, where the defendant said he obtained his School Leaving Certificate as opposed to Boys’ High School, Awkunanu, which the plaintiff claimed.

The judge dismissed the suit and said the plaintiff failed to investigate the defendant’s claims and therefore failed to prove the forgery case against him. ‎

Nnadi had sued Uba on the grounds that he presented a forged School certificate from Boys’ High School, Awkunanu, and so unqualified and ineligible to stand for elections.

Uba, in his counter affidavit, ‎however, denied ownership of the said certificate and maintained that he graduated from Union Secondary School, Awkunawu, which he submitted to INEC and was properly cleared.
