MASSOB says Buhari believes he will easily crush Biafra as reactions trail Buhari’s broadcast

MASSOB says Buhari believes he will easily crush Biafra as reactions trail Buhari’s broadcast

President Muhammadu Buhari’s resumption broadcast, yesterday, elicited  reactions, ranging from strong commendations for his proclamations to sustain the unity of the country, to chastisements of same by some who said his assertions came too little and too late.

Buhari and Late Ojukwu Commendations for the President came from usual and unusual quarters, including co-convener of the Resume or Resign group, Charles Oputa (Charly Boy); the Senate, organised labour, national Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN; Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF among others.

Senator Shehu Sani said the speech was the ‘roar of a lion which came handily to eviscerate the threat to national cohesion caused by ants and bugs.’

Many others, however, found fault.

 Among them were Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, who said he didn’t expect much and didn’t get anything from the speech;

the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, which said the claims towards indivisibility were mere wishful thinking; Eastern Consultative Assembly, ECA, which said the President was out of touch with reality on the issues on ground and former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, who described the speech as uninspiring.

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sir Austin Opara, in his reaction, said the broadcast fell short of expectations, while Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, described the speech as off the mark.

Former Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nduka Eya, chided the President for his vow to deal with secessionist agitators.

Kudos for Buhari Leading the commendations on the President’s broadcast, Chief Odigie-Oyegun, in his reaction, said: “The speech was absolutely outstanding.

You see, he is the President of this nation. He has been away for quite a bit of time. Agents of destabilisation have been very much at work because they thought his absence created a gap and a weakness within the polity which they tried to exploit.

So Mr. President in his wisdom discerned that the stability, unity, peace, and security of this nation and the ordinary Nigerian are the key issues at this material time.

“He addressed them and went straight to the core of the issues. He left nobody in any doubt that any Nigerian is entitled as a matter of right to live, work and operate in any part of this country.

He made it clear and left no one in any doubt that yes, while people can discuss issues and the relationship in the nation, the National Assembly is there to handle such issues.

“But he drew one red line that the only thing that is not on the table is that this nation can be divided.

He made it clear that the unity of the Nigerian nation is not up for negotiation of any type. Senate

The Senate in its reaction, yesterday, said as an institution, it was happy with the speech of President Buhari, just as it hailed him and described the speech as apt, precise and highly cogent.

“What the President said is only reaffirming our position that Nigerians have the right to reside anywhere in the country, but certainly that does not extend to a people who by action and utterances, say they are not Nigerians.

In any case, since the Kaduna Declaration, we have never called anybody to violence, and none of our statements fall within the definition of hate speech.

We are in total support of any move by the government to bring about sanity in the country and to finally bring and end to all divisive agitations and separatist tendencies,” he added.

CAN The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, on its part, lauded the President for denouncing inflammatory statements capable of causing chaos in the country.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna, yesterday, Rev. Mathias Echioda, the state CAN chairman, also commended the President’s resoluteness that the country’s unity was not negotiable.

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s address to Nigerians this morning (Monday) is a move in the right direction. “Buhari’s statement is a clear call to all sectional patriots and hate champions of our dear country to put away their swords.

We are better together as a Nation.

“We don’t only welcome Buhari home we congratulate him for such a bold step this morning,” he said.

Charly Boy Maverick entertainer and good governance advocate, Charles Oputa, also known as Charly Boy, who was part of the organisers of the Resume or Resign group that two weeks ago commenced a campaign for the President to resume or resign, also welcomed the President’s speech, saying he shared similar thoughts with the President on the Nigerian project.

According to him, there is a good reason for all Nigerians to believe in the unity of the country if the fundamental issues of our value erosion are addressed.

“A lot of my Southern brothers are asking why I should believe in Nigeria. My answer is why not if we can solve the fundamental problem bedevilling the nation which is the fact that our values have been eroded.

“The youths are learning from their elders who are the political leaders. So far, we have seen elders and leaders who are enmeshed in corruption, who have managed to corner government.

These are not the kind of people to move the country forward. “I want to see a better environment for all Nigerians. In fact, it’s painful that some of our children abroad no longer wish to return to Nigeria. Even, the ones in Nigeria want to leave the country.

“If we push hard enough, Nigeria might just get better or something more positive than the present situation might happen, because we can’t continue to exist like this.

“I am an Igbo man. Even my people are ‘yabbing’ me and asking me why break a sweat over Nigeria, let’s face Biafra instead. But I say to them; I may be a dreamer, but I still believe in Nigeria.

“It is the same fight ‘Our Mumu Don Do’ movement and what the pro-Biafra agitators are struggling for. It is almost the same fight.”

Senators Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, also welcomed the speech saying that he agreed with the president that every Nigerian has the right to live anywhere in the country without let or hindrance.

The deputy, PDP Senate leader, said he “was very encouraged by his position on the indivisibility of Nigeria.”

On his part, Chairman, Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Shehu Sani, APC, Kaduna Central, likened the President’s speech to a Lion’s roar re-establishing full control over his den. Senator Sani, who noted that the President spoke the minds of Nigerians who wanted unity and progress in the country, said he equally spoke as a nationalist.

“The President spoke the mind of Nigerians who cherish our unity, peace and collective progress. He spoke as a Nationalist, and he spoke my mind a hundred per cent.

“He sent a clear message to terrorists, ethnic irredentists, secessionists, and champions of sectionalism that this union is an indissoluble matrimony in all circumstances.

“The President’s speech was a Lion’s roar meant to reaffirm and reinforce the unity of a nation showing signs of disintegration during his absence.

The President speech was a Lion’s roar re-establishing full control of a staggering clime heading to an engineered implosion during his absence.

“The President speech was a Lion’s roar meant to wake up a slumbering nation dangerously forgetting the lessons of its history and the calling of its future.

The president speech was a Lion’s roar meant to extinguish the Soviet/Yugoslavia inferno stoking in our country.

“During the President’s absence, our hard-earned trophy of peace and plaque of unity were gathering dust and gradually being eaten by ants and bugs; the Lion roared to clear them.”

Knocks for the president MASSOB MASSOB, however, disagreed saying it was hypocritical of the President to still believe in one Nigeria.

The leader of the group, Comrade Uchenna Madu, in a statement, yesterday, said: “We the people of Biafra can never be deceived by a man Biafrans fully blooded with religious and ethnic sentimental hatred against the people of Biafra.

“Buhari in his inner sense of reasoning believes that with his kinsmen occupying the military positions of service chiefs, including all the most senior military offices/positions, he will easily crush Biafra.

“Maybe with his intimidating tendencies over Igbo governors, National Assembly members, religious/opinion/ political leaders, he still thinks he can crush Biafra.

ECA The Eastern Consultative Assembly, ECA, on its part, faulted Buhari’s claim that the country’s unity was non-negotiable and settled, saying Nigeria’s continued existence must be negotiated by all parts for it to be restructured.

Secretary of ECA, Evangelist Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko, while reacting on behalf of the group, described the President’s speech as “shocking.”

The statement, entitled “NIGERIA MUST BE NEGOTIATED,” read in part:

“Nigeria is tottering at the edge of the precipice, bursting at the seams and sitting on a combustible keg of gun powder, and Buhari and his speech writers are the only people who are unaware of this self-evident fact.

“If Mr. President does not, as a matter of urgency, set up a Constituent Assembly to draft a new people’s constitution that will be affirmed at a referendum before the end 2017, there may be no Nigeria by 2018.

“We also implore Mr. President to apologise to Nigerians without delay on his very provocative position on Nigeria’s very fragile unity.”

Femi Fani-Kayode Former Minister of Aviation and PDP chieftain, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, described the broadcast as uninspiring, noting that the Commander-in-Chief ought to have used the channel to apologise to Nigerians over what he termed  the incompetence of his administration.

“During his thoroughly uninspiring six minute broadcast this morning (yesterday), instead of appealing to Nigerians for patience and understanding and instead of apologizing to them for the ineptitude and sheer incompetence that his government has displayed over the last two years, President Muhammadu Buhari has returned home after 105 days on his sick bed in the United Kingdom and not only insulted Nigerians but also threatened them.

“He made no attempt to reach out to the people, to build bridges and to calm the troubled waters in what is a traumatized and divided nation, and instead, he sought to intimidate and talk down on our people and his perceived enemies,” he wrote on his blog.

“The President appears to have failed to appreciate the fact that times have changed and that he cannot impose his will on others.

If he wants to enhance national unity, which is, of course, a noble and righteous venture, and if he really wants Nigeria to remain one, then he must desist from his dangerous and provocative rhetoric; he must treat all Nigerians like human beings and as equals; he must exhibit a much higher degree of sobriety and accommodation of contrary and dissenting views, and he must display far more sensitivity, understanding, and restraint in his interactions and discourse with the opposition and those that do not agree with him.

Fani-Kayode also decried the President’s refusal to order the arrest of those who issued quit notice to a section of the country.

“Worse of all, other than saying that every Nigerian has the right to live in any part of the country, which in itself is undoubtedly a welcome and gratifying assertion, he refused to order the arrest or threaten to cage and bring to justice those that gave the Igbo people a chilling quit notice and that have promised to unleash genocide, ethnic cleansing and mass murder on them if they refused to abide by it and leave the north by October 1st.

“This strange omission and instructive refusal by Mr. President is unacceptable, and it feeds into the narrative that there may well be some frightful hidden agenda unfolding.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Ohanaeze Ndigbo described the two years achievement of President Muhammadu Buhari as a mere political choreography which do not have direct impact on the lives of Nigerians.

Reacting to the President’s broadcast in Abakaliki, the National Publicity Secretary of the apex body, Prince Achi Okpaga, stated that the APC were responsible for hate speeches and that they should purge themselves first before accusing anybody of it.

“I join other well-meaning Nigerians in thanking God for the President’s miraculous recovery.

It is however pertinent for the government to get on with business and start implementing the budget to the fullest.

This administration has less than two years to prove its mettle, in all ramifications, to Nigerians.

I am tempted to observe that the achievement the government is crediting to itself is a mere political choreography.

BREAKING News: Saraki Has Returned All His Pensions Collected from Kwara State - SSG Says

The Kwara State Government has said the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has returned all the pensions he collected so far as a former two-term governor of the state.

Bukola Saraki

The Secretary to Kwara State Government (SSG), Alhaji Isiaka Gold, on Wednesday, said Senate President, Bukola Saraki has returned all monies paid to him as pension back to the coffers of the state government.

The SSG made this known on Wednesday in Ilorin in a press statement issued to clarify the issue of Saraki’s pension being paid by the state government.

According to him, Saraki, who was a two-term governor of the state, has stopped receiving pension from the state since August 2015.

The SSG did not state how much was returned to government coffers, but said a letter dated Aug 20, 2015 by the Senate President also directed that money credited to his account for pension be refunded to the government.

“Dr Saraki requested that the payment of pension to his account be stopped and the amount already credited to the account be refunded to the Government, the State Government promptly complied.

“The Government not only stopped the payment of the said pension, the amount already paid into Dr Saraki’s account since he left office was deducted from the money owed to him as well as his other outstanding lawful entitlements,” Gold added.

According to him, Saraki is entitled to the money he returned as provided in the third schedule, Paragraph D (i) of the Governor and Deputy Governor (payment of pension) Law, No. 12 of 2010 of Kwara State.

He said that apart from Saraki, other former governors and their deputies were entitled to pension as provided by the law.

“It should be noted that neither the Kwara State Government nor Dr Bukola Saraki violated the state pension law or any other law for that matter.

The State Pension Law empowers the State Government to pay pension to former Governors of the State,” Gold stressed.

The SSG said the Senate President should be commended for his decision to abandon his legal entitlements. “It is the hope of the state government that this clarification will end all the controversy about this issue,” he added.

Seven Alleged Ritualists Hiding Inside Underground Kidnapper's Den Arrested in Lagos State

One of the alleged kidnapper and ritualist after he was caught yesterday

An underground ritualist den used by deadly kidnappers discovered yesterday has led to the arrest of seven alleged ritualists.

The police in Lagos have arrested seven suspected ritualists following the discovery of an underground kidnappers’ den at Obadeyi in Ijaye area of the state.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, told newsmen at the scene on Tuesday evening that the dungeon was discovered by joint efforts of security agents and members of the public.

According to Owoseni, the place was discovered after a highway sweeper with the Lagos State Waste Management Agency raised an alarm when she heard the voice of a woman calling for help from the canal.

He said that two of those caught were set ablaze by the mob before the arrival of the police at the scene.

Owoseni said that detectives would be on the ground on Wednesday with more sniffer dogs and other security gadgets to ascertain more facts concerning the incident.

He said, “In the process, people moved in there to help and also noticed that some persons who had some charms like a gourd in their mouths tried to escape and that made the crowd suspect something unusual.

“For now about seven persons, who are suspected to be using those buildings as a base for rituals, have been arrested.

“We will continue to give it a touch of professionalism and scientific approach by deploying sniffer dogs that can also penetrate into the canal to see whether we can get materials to be of evidential value.”

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that items including clothes, under wears, identity cards and wigs of people suspected to be victims were seen at an abandoned house near the canal reportedly used as a hideout by the suspects.

According to an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, two of the kidnappers had come out of the canal in an attempt to escape but they were overpowered by the angry mob.

Mr. Fatai Ajibola, an eyewitness, said that some members of Oodua Peoples’ Congress also went into the dungeon to continue with the search and recovered shoes, clothes and other female items.

A resident, who identified himself simply as Kunle, said the discovery of the den came as a surprise to most members of the community.

“Most of us in the estate pass through the bridge on daily basis without observing such a thing under the bridge; only God knows how many people that have been killed by the ritual killers in the dungeon.” he said.

The police commissioner said that investigation was underway and assured that perpetrators would be made to face the full wrath of the law. [NAN]

93 Days After: President Buhari Vows to Resign If He Does Not Recover

93 Days After: President Buhari Vows to Resign If He Does Not Recover
President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari who has reportedly made immense improvements in the last couple of weeks after spending 93 days on medical vacation in London, has allegedly said that he may resign if he fails to recover fully to resume his duties.

President Muhammadu Buhari has given a timeline that he may resign by a specific time if he doesn’t recover from his undisclosed illness.

Buhari left Nigeria for London on May 7 to attend to his failing health and since then, his deputy, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has been acting in his stead.

Speaking with The Independent on Tuesday, a credible source in the presidency said though the president has made immense improvements in the last couple of weeks, he was reported to have told his close aides recently that if he doesn’t recover by a specific date, he will tender his resignation letter.

He, however, failed to disclose the specific date or month given by the president.

He added that contrary to the views by many, the president is not desperate to cling on to power but he is being advised by doctors to continue with the treatment while Acting President Yemi Osinbajo presides over the affairs of the nation.

He also confirmed that though some aides of the president tried to bypass the acting president in order to get to the president, the president directed them to relate with the acting president who is presently in charge of the affairs of the nation.

He attested to the fact that the decision of the president to direct all state matters to the acting president has greatly contributed to the remarkable progress the president has made in the last couple of weeks.

“The president is not desperate to cling on to power if his health cannot carry him.

I can tell you authoritatively that he has given a timeline that if he doesn’t recover fully on a specific date, he will file in his resignation letter and if you know President Buhari very well, he meant what he said.

“That is why Nigerians who love the president and his efforts in restoring Nigeria’s lost glory should continue to pray for his quick recovery.

It will be to our disservice if he dies as some people are wishing him”, he said.

Another reliable source revealed that when the president was transmitting the second letter of his medical vacation to the leadership of the National Assembly intimating it of his trip to London, he wanted to transmit a letter of resignation but a retired General from Taraba prevailed on him not to do so.

Femi Adesina had said “the length of the president’s stay in London will be determined by the doctors” after transmitting “letters about the trip to the Senate and the House of Representatives, in compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 constitution”.

Also speaking, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, former Minister of Transport and member of the Board of Trustees of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), said it doesn’t serve anybody’s interest if President Buhari resigns.

According to him, instead of demanding for the president’s resignation, Nigerians should pray for him to return and do his job.

He said the PDP wants Buhari to recover quickly and seek re-election in 2019, adding that the PDP will trounce the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if it presents the president as its flagbearer in the 2019 elections.

“I don’t think we should compound Nigeria’s problem by asking for the president’s resignation.

First of all, it is not of his own making that he is sick. All of us must have been sick at one time or the other. If we want to help Nigeria succeed, let us pray for him to recover and come back to do his job.

“We in the PDP are not bothered by his resignation at all.

We are even praying that he should come back and re-contest in 2019 because we know that we are going to beat him. But it doesn’t serve anybody’s interest to ask him to resign.

Those doing so are just wasting their time”, he said.

See How Jonathan Reacted to Ozubulu Church Killings and Anti-Igbo Song in the North

See How Jonathan Reacted to Ozubulu Church Killings and Anti-Igbo Song in the North
Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

Following the release of anti-igbo song in northern part of Nigeria and the sad killing of innocent church goers in Anambra, former President Goodluck Jonathan has reacted.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reacted to the sad murder of innocent church goers in Ozubulu area of Anambra state after gunmen invaded a Catholic church and shot dead at least 12 persons last week Sunday.

Jonathan also condemned the hate song about the Igbos which is being circulated in Northern Nigeria, saying the song could lead to another breakdown of law and other.

He pointed out that a similar song was what led to the Rwandan Genocide in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed.

He wrote:

"I have taken my time before commenting on the killings at the St. Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu, in Anambra state, in order that I could be accurately briefed on the truth of the matter.

However, I condemn the killings and express my shock at such an event which is outside our culture of respect and reverence for religious places of worship and love for our fellow man.

I condole with the survivors and the families of the victims and pray for the departed. In order to ensure that such occurrences never reoccur, we must rededicate ourselves to our principles of being our brother's keeper and that without delay.

I am also disturbed about the news of a song celebrating hatred against a particular Nigerian ethnic group. Given that a similar song is what ignited the Rwandan Genocide, as a nation, we must not take these reports lightly.

I urge the security services to do their utmost to nip this wickedness in the bud.

As I have said previously, we must understand and accept that all Nigerians are brothers and sisters born from the womb of one Nigeria. May this be uppermost in our minds as we pray that God may bless Nigeria. GEJ."

Shocking Confessions of Ex-Policeman Held for Armed Robbery

Shocking Confessions of Ex-Policeman Held for Armed Robbery
The former police men nabbed for robbery

The arrest of some police gangsters in Delta State, has left unsuspecting members of the public wondering about the kind of friendship the Nigeria Police Force has established with them.

A 37-year-old dismissed officer of the Nigerian Police Force identified as Kingsley Ochei, who hails from Ekuoma Community in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, and the ringleader of the suspected criminally-minded police officers that were recently arrested in the state, has made some shocking confession.

He had this to say when they were caught; “Since I was dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force some years back, life became worse for me.

My family and I found it difficult feeding. I cannot pay my siblings school fees. That was how the hard way became the only way for me.

"My heart was troubled. So, I thought of hijacking a petroleum truck that will fetch me good money to meet my needs. I sold the idea to my friends, who are in service and they bought into it.

That was how it all started.”

Kingsley was the ringleader of a 5-man gang of serving policemen, namely, Sergeants Nwankem Ebonzim ( F/No. 413318), 37, Prince Innocent Obaseki (F/No. 441254), 45, of No. 79, Okpe Quarters, Abavo, in Ika; Micheal Chima attached to 31 PMF, Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South council area of Delta State,(F/No. 375631)

Sergeant Christopher Onyegho attached to Special Protection Unit, Base 5 Benin City, Edo, State and one Ndubuisi Okolie, 29, also from Ekuoma, who hijacked a truck loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), from one Ifeanyi Okeke, a 35-year-old man, of Umuosime Village, Nkpor, Anambra State.

According to New Telegraph, the truck was heading to Onitsha in Anambra State with the consignment, which he lifted from Oghara, Ethiope West Council Area of the state.

On interrogation, the gang leader confessed that he was thrown out of the Force after he committed some undisclosed acts of indiscipline.

“Life has not been the same for me. The whole thing became worse for me. All my colleagues that I relied upon to be of help and assistance to start up a business failed me.

Since I have nothing to fall back upon because every eye was on me as a dismissed policeman, and I have a family to take care of. Many thoughts started crossing my mind.

“When things are terribly rough at times, I will call on some of my colleagues when I was in service, if they are on patrol, I will hang on with them. If anything comes out, they will share little for me to keep life going.”

Speaking further he said; “As I said before, frustration of life forced me into this crime. Devil tempted and lured me into armed robbery. I beg for forgiveness.”

He swore that his gang had not laid hand on any of their victims since they formed their gang, saying, “We don’t kill. We have not killed anybody.

We only hijack trucks loaded with petroleum products.”

He added that he has always had smooth operations because of the ‘gallantry’ performance of his gang members.

“With the presence of my serving colleagues, we usually find our way to any petrol station where a friend is and we sell the products and share the money”, Kingsley confessed.

The kingpin, who vowed not to lie but say the truth because the game was up, further confessed that they had successfully hijacked many trucks and sold their products at the rate of N1.8 million, N2 million and N3 million respectively, depending on their quantity.

“We share the money among ourselves, and with my share, I am able to fend for my family.”

However, the alleged receiver of the stolen products, who runs a petrol station at Abavo, claimed to be a benefactor to the dismissed policeman. “Yes, he is my friend.

He normally visited my station and from time to time, I dash him money because of his pitiable condition. In most cases, I dash him from N5,000 or N10,000 and above.

“On a particular day, he told me in confidence that he has some products given to him, and because he is a close friend, without asking about the source, I bought it from him.

He has sold products to me for about three times without any problems until this last one that led to our arrest.”

Kingsley’s shocking revelation did not only indict men of the Force on the burning issue of bribery and corruption, it confirmed the speculation of suspecting members of the public about how policemen were collaborating with robbers and leasing out their riffles to them for criminal operations.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Zanna M. Ibrahim, who expressed displeasure that his men ran down the avowed ‘Quick Response’ and ‘combat readiness’ of the command when he paraded them at the command headquarters in Asaba.

He lamented that the ‘police’ bandits ambushed the victim at Alifikede, around Agbor, the boundary between Edo and Delta states, in Ika axis of the Big Heart State, having pretended to be men of Anti-Vandal Team.

“They hijacked the truck, handcuffed the victim and his conductor, pushed and abandoned them in the bush and took the truck with the product to Abavo community in Ika South L.G.A of Delta State.

They sold the product to one Prince Innocent Obaseki, the fourth suspect and later abandoned the hijacked truck along Ute-Okpu road in Ika North East L.G.A of Delta State.

“Fortunately, the telephone handset of the kingpin of the gang named Kingsley Ochei, a dismissed Police Officer was recovered at the scene.

SARS men immediately swung into action and arrested Ochei. He confessed and mentioned other five suspects listed above and subsequently they were equally arrested”, the CP said.

How Child Soldiers Murder, R*pe and Drink Victims' Blood in Congo

Child soldiers (File photo)

Victims of ethnic cleansing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have narrated gory experiences of maiming, r*ping and killing taking place in the country.

Violence in the Kasai provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo appears to be taking on an increasing and disturbing ethnic dimension, a report by the UN Human Rights Office has warned.

Information gathered by a team of UN human rights investigators* suggests that some of the violations and abuses committed in the Kasais may amount to crimes under international law.

The report is based on interviews with 96 people who had fled to neighbouring Angola to escape the violence in Kamonia territory in Kasai.

The UN team was able to confirm that between 12 March and 19 June some 251 people were the victims of extrajudicial and targeted killings.

These included 62 children, of which 30 were aged under eight.

Interviewees indicated that local security forces and other officials actively fomented, fuelled, and occasionally led, attacks on the basis of ethnicity.

The UN Mission in the DRC has identified at least 80 mass graves in the Kasais.

The team saw people who had been seriously injured or mutilated, including a seven-year-old boy who had had several fingers cut off and his face totally disfigured.

A woman whose arm had been chopped off recounted how she managed to escape, hiding for several days in the forest before reaching the Angolan border and being airlifted to hospital.

Some of the refugees pleaded with the UN team to be heard, and two of the people they interviewed died shortly afterwards from their injuries.

“Survivors have spoken of hearing the screams of people being burned alive, of seeing loved ones chased and cut down, of themselves fleeing in terror.

Such bloodletting is all the more horrifying because we found indications that people are increasingly being targeted because of their ethnic group,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

“Their accounts should serve as a grave warning to the Government of the DRC to act now to prevent such violence from tipping into wider ethnic cleansing.”

“I call on the Government to take all necessary measures to fulfil its primary obligation to protect people from all ethnic backgrounds in the greater Kasai area,” he added.

The fighting began in August 2016 between the Kamuina Nsapu militia and the Government.

The UN team was able to confirm that another militia, called the Bana Mura, was formed around March/April 2017 by individuals from the Tshokwe, Pende and Tetela ethnic groups.

It was allegedly armed and supported by local traditional leaders and security officials, including from the army and the police, to attack the Luba and Lulua communities who are accused of being accomplices of the Kamuina Nsapu.

According to the report, “the Bana Mura allegedly undertook a campaign aimed at eliminating the entire Luba and Lulua populations in the villages they attacked.”

In many of the incidents reported to the team, FARDC soldiers were seen leading groups of Bana Mura militia during attacks on villages.

“The Government’s responsibility includes ensuring that those who organised, recruited and armed the Bana Mura or other militias are identified and prosecuted,” the High Commissioner stressed.

Many Luba and Lulua witnesses and victims said that the Bana Mura militia carried out what appeared to be well-planned attacks on several villages in Kamonia territory in April and May.

Wearing white bandanas made from mosquito nets and bracelets of leaves, the Bana Mura attacked Luba and Lulua inhabitants, beheading, mutilating and shooting victims; in some cases burning them alive in their homes.

In one of the most shocking attacks, in the village of Cinq, 90 patients, colleagues and people who had sought refuge in a health centre were killed, including patients who could not escape when the surgical ward was set on fire.

Victims’ accounts included a woman who told the team how the militia killed her husband, attacked her daughter with machetes, and shot her and her 22-month-old son, who later had to have his leg amputated at a hospital in Angola.

The team also heard accounts of rape and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence.

People also told the UN team that the Kamuina Nsapu militia carried out targeted killings, including against the military, police, and public officials.

In all incidents documented by the team, the Kamuina Nsapu were reported to have used boys and girls, many aged between seven and 13, as fighters.

Witnesses also said groups of girls called “Lamama” accompanied the militia, shaking their straw skirts and drinking victims’ blood as part of a magic ritual that was supposed to render the group invincible.

All the refugees interviewed by the team said they were convinced of the magical powers of the Kamuina Nsapu.

“This generalised belief, and resulting fear, by segments of the population in the Kasais may partly explain why a poorly armed militia, composed to a large extent of children, has been able to resist offensives by a national army for over a year,” the report says.

Given the situation in the Kasais, the report highlights the need for the team of international experts on the situation in the Kasais, established in June by the UN Human Rights Council, to be granted safe and unrestricted access to information, sites and individuals deemed necessary for their work.

This report will be put at the disposal of the international experts, as well as any other judicial institution addressing the human rights situation in the Kasais, in an effort to advance accountability efforts in this regard. -APO

How Saraki Fraudulently Obtained Court Order Freezing Sahara Reporters Account - Sowore Blows Hot

How Saraki Fraudulently Obtained Court Order Freezing Sahara Reporters Account - Sowore Blows Hot

The publisher of the controversial online news platform, SaharaReporters, has made serious allegations against Bukola Saraki.

Mr Omoyele Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Nigeria's popular online medium, has vowed to challenge an order of a Kwara State High Court which blocked bank accounts linked to him last month.

According to Premium Times, Omoyele Sowore said the July 25 garnishee order in Ilorin, the state capital, was “fraudulently procured” by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, as part of an ongoing libel suit against him and his platform.

A judge, Adeyinka Oyinloye, had issued the order to the United Bank for Africa, UBA and Guaranty Trust Bank, GTB, bankers of Mr. Sowore and Sahara Reporters, instructing them to immediately seize all funds held in a string of accounts associated with the defendants.

The development has been condemned by media rights advocates, who warned judicial officers to exercise restraint in pronouncing judgments in libel cases.

Mr. Oyinloye’s order came nearly a month after he also awarded Mr. Saraki up to N4 billion in damages on June 28.

Omoyele Sowore

The judge also said Sahara Reporters and Mr. Sowore must pay 10 per cent (N400 million) interest on the N4 billion monthly until both the principal damages and accrued interests are finally cleared.

Mr. Saraki instituted the case in Ilorin, his hometown where he is considered the most powerful political personality, accusing Sahara Reporters of publishing defamatory content against his personality.

The four stories at issue, which included news and opinion contents, were published between September and December 2015, court filings published by Vanguard Newspapers showed.

Although the Vanguard quoted Mr. Saraki’s lawyers as alleging that Mr. Sowore frustrated all efforts to serve court summons on him, the publisher contradicted the claim in an exchange with Premium Times Tuesday.

He explained that Mr. Saraki’s lawyers and associates ‘conspired’ to send court papers to wrong addresses both in Nigeria and United States in order to deprive him of a chance to defend himself before the judge.

“They sent their notice to 142 W. 29th Street, New York, when for a fact Sahara Reporters’ address is situated at 146 W. 29th Street, New York,” Mr. Sowore told Premium Times.

“So, you can see they deliberately sent it to the wrong address so we won’t be aware of the lawsuit,” he added.

In Lagos, where Sahara Reporters opened a multimedia facility on Isaac John Street in May 25, Mr. Saraki’s lawyers also sent the notice to the wrong street number, Mr. Sowore said.

The publisher said when he heard that a court process that involved him was going on in Ilorin, he informed his lawyers in Lagos to obtain documents relating to the case.

“But while they were trying to get the June 28 judgement and other relating documents, the garnishee order was issued,” he said.

Mr. Sowore condemned Mr. Saraki’s tactics but said Sahara Reporters’ activities have not been ‘seriously impeded by the development.’

“They blocked only funds in the bank accounts in Nigeria. But our activities have always been run from the United States,” the publisher said

The money blocked in Nigeria belongs to Sahara Reporters Media Lab which is a foundation, Mr. Sowore added.

He said that the media lab was never part of the libel action as ‘it didn’t even exist as at the time the case was instituted.’

“But Saraki used his intrigues and influence over the State Security Service to get the Media Lab account frozen,” Mr. Sowore said.

Specifically, the account was holding the remaining portion the $300,000 grant which Sahara Reporters Foundation received from MacArthur Foundation earlier this year, Mr. Sowore told Premium Times.

“We’ve done a lot of projects from the $300,000 so far paid to us by the MacArthur Foundation. The rest of the money is what the court blocked,” the publisher said.

Lanre Arogundade, Director at International Press Centre in Lagos, criticised the judgement as hasty, lopsided and draconian.

How Saraki Fraudulently Obtained Court Order Freezing Sahara Reporters Account - Sowore Blows Hot
“The judiciary needs a lot of caution in entering judgement against the media. This is because we’re looking at the issue of possible libel or defamation which is often used to suppress the media,” he said.

He said the N4 billion judgement against Sahara Reporters was largely aimed at bankrupting the platform than serving justice to the plaintiff.

“When you award a damage of N4 billion, you have gone beyond getting justice for whoever was offended to wreck the organisation,” he said.

He said Mr. Saraki got the judgement because of his status as a highly-placed public official.

“If not because it was Saraki that went to court, the judgement might have been different, especially for an ordinary man,” Mr. Arogundade said.

“It was an overkill,” he added.

Mr. Arogundade observed that the Constitution vested the powers to monitor the activities of public officials in the press, but added that such authorities do not necessarily shield media practitioners from being diligent in the course of their duty.

“We’re not saying journalists should not be fair, reliable and responsible in their activities, but any attempt to make them become fearful will not be tolerated,” he said.

Mr. Arogundade said Sahara Reporters Foundation should not have been targeted by the court as it was not a party to the lawsuit.

Mr. Saraki’s spokesperson, Yusuf Olaniyonu, declined to issue comments on the allegations to Premium Times despite repeated efforts by this newspaper between Tuesday andWednesday.

The Senate President was quoted online as saying he would donate all damages awarded to him from the lawsuit to support some media houses in financial distress across the country.

BREAKING News: Wladimir Klitschko Retires from Boxing, Ending Chance of Re-match with Anthony Joshua

BREAKING News: Wladimir Klitschko Retires from Boxing, Ending Chance of Re-match with Anthony Joshua

Wladimir Klitschko has announced his shocking retirement from boxing with immediate effect, ending any chance of a rematch against heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua.

Ukrainian boxing legend, Wladimir Klitschko, has announced his retirement from boxing, and called time on a 21-year career, ending the prospect of a rematch with Anthony Joshua, which had been pencilled for November 11.

The 41-year-old who enjoyed a 21-year career in the win in which he won 64 of his 69 fights, was famously beaten by Joshua in an almighty heavyweight scrap on 29 April this year in an 11th round stoppage.

According to Sky Sports, a statement from the former world champion read: "I deliberately took a few weeks to make my decision, to make sure I had enough distance from the fight at Wembley Stadium.

"As an amateur and a professional boxer, I have achieved everything I dreamed of, and now I want to start my second career after sports.

"I would have never imagined that I would have such a long and incredibly successful boxing career. I'm very thankful for this. Thanks to everyone who has always supported me, especially my family, my team and my many fans."

Klitschko turned pro in 1996 after winning gold at the Atlanta Olympic Games, and he recovered from an early defeat to Ross Puritty to win the WBO's heavyweight title in 2003.

Corrie Sanders stopped him early to take the belt in 2003, and when Lamon Brewster handed him a similar defeat three fights later Klitschko regrouped and rebuilt his style under trainer Emanuel Steward.

The new approach proved so successful Klitschko went 11 years without defeat and accumulated three of the four recognised world titles before his shock points loss to Tyson Fury in late 2015.

A rematch with Fury failed to materialise and he instead took on the challenge of halting the Joshua juggernaut, flooring the younger champion before succumbing to a late stoppage.

Reflecting on his defeat in June Klitschko said: "I never thought I would say such a thing, but: in defeat, I achieved much greater success than I would have had I won.

"Fans and sports enthusiasts worldwide are celebrating my performance and showing me their appreciation. Even my opponent expressed his respect for me."

Tension Brews as All Americans Are Ordered to Leave North Korea by September

Tension Brews as All Americans Are Ordered to Leave North Korea by September
Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump

All Americans in the East Asian nation of North Korea have allegedly been ordered to leave that country by September.

According to a report by Daily Star UK, American citizens have been ordered to leave North Korea by September 1 at the latest as a ban prohibiting them from traveling to the country comes to fruition.

An exemption was noted for approved humanitarian travel and for journalists in some circumstances.

The ban is to remain in effect for one year, unless it is revoked sooner by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

The travel ban was first announced last month in the wake of the death of American student Otto Warmbier.

Warmbier, 22, died in June after being held for more than a year on charges of stealing a propaganda poster from a North Korean hotel.

A statement reads: “The Department of State has determined that the serious risk to United States nationals of arrest and long-term detention represents imminent danger to the physical safety of United States nationals traveling to and within the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).”

“All United States passports are declared invalid for travel to, in, or through the DPRK unless specially validated for such travel,” it added.

After Warnbier's death, President Trump said he was determined to “prevent such tragedies from befalling innocent people at the hands of regimes that do not respect the rule of law or basic human decency.”

Tensions are high between the countries as war fears in the Korean peninsular reach boiling point.

Confusion as Arewa Group Insists That October 1 Quit Notice to Igbos Stays

The Leader of the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, Shettima Yerima,

Contrary to widespread reports in recent times, the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum has insisted that the quit notice to Igbos stays.

According to a The Punch report, the coalition of Northern Group said in Abuja on Tuesday that the October 1, 2017 ultimatum given to Igbo living in the North to vacate the zone remained.

The coalition, which is made up of 16 different groups, spoke at a meeting it held with a former Governor of Abia State, Chief Uzor Kalu.

The leader of the coalition, Mr Shettima Yerima, restated the group’s position during the meeting.

He said though the groups in the coalition had held meetings on the ultimatum, they had yet to lift the quit notice.

Addressing a joint press conference with Kalu and some leaders from the South-East, Yerima however, said the coalition was holding consultations with stakeholders across the country with a view to reviewing its position.

While acknowledging that they had been meetings to douse tension in the country, he said, “I do not also remember specifically saying we are going to finally withdraw the quit notice. No, certainly not. We have not.

“But we said, within the week, we are going to make a statement.”

He, nevertheless, assured Nigerians that there was no cause for alarm as he expressed the coalition’s belief in a united Nigeria.

The coalition’s chairman said he and his colleagues were concerned about the unity of Nigeria and would not allow it to be threatened.

He added, “It is only those who are blind that will say the unity of this country is not being threatened. But you have prominent Nigerians like him (Kalu) who have shown a lot of worries over this situation.

“To us, we strongly believe that Nigeria is for us and Nigeria belongs to everybody and we are all equal in this project.

“We will not in any way accept anybody who wants to undermine the unity of this country. We want those who want to remain and who believe in the unity of Nigeria to remain.

“But for those who don’t, they are free to go to their Biafra and stay there. For us, we want Nigeria and will remain in Nigeria.”

Yerima, who was flanked by members of his group, said, “We need to do a lot of work, we are in consultations now.

We are likely going on consultations in northern region; we will discuss issues before we finally review our position.

“But you can be rest assured that those who believe in Nigeria should remain where they are and be assured of their safety. But to those who don’t believe in Nigeria, we cannot guarantee their safety.

“So, it’s better if you want to do your Biafra, you stay and do your Biafra over there. But if you believe in Nigeria, we intend to work side by side with you to build the nation of our dreams.”

Kalu called on southerners living in the north not to entertain any fear.

He said he would soon meet with the leader of the Independent Peoples of Biafra, Mr Nnamdi Kanu, and other Biafran agitators.

Kalu regretted that the agitation for the creation of Biafra had affected the Gross Domestic Product of the South-East, saying neighbouring countries like Cameroon, Chad and Niger had stopped patronising the zone.

While noting that the diversity of Nigeria was its strength, the former governor stressed that all parts of the country were equally important as they contributed in the same way to its well-being.

He advocated restructuring and called on the people in the north not to see it as being against its interest.

Kalu said, “Restructuring does not mean breaking the country. There are certain things we have outgrown.

We need to address the issue of how our economy should be run so that the masses, the poor people will benefit from efforts of government.”

Anthony Kanyari Muga, a city taxi driver in Kenya, was on Wednesday charged in a Nairobi court with robbing and r*ping a female passenger at gunpoint.

According to The Star, Anthony Kanyari Muga denied the two counts when he appeared before Milimani senior resident magistrate Hellen Onkwani.

The court heard that he committed the act near Ngara primary school jointly with a Mr Mwangi on July 31, 2017.

They robbed the complainant (name withheld) her personal items, a mobile phone and cash Sh 31,000 - all valued at Sh 54,800.

The court heard that two raped the woman in the same vehicle of registration number KCK 681K.

According to the prosecution, the complainant had arrived in Nairobi from Mombasa at around 1am and hired the taxi within the city centre.

It is said that after the driver arrived, he called another man to accompany him to the complainant's residence near Pangani.

Instead, Muga drove to a dark place near Ngara primary school where the offence is alleged to have been committed.

The prosecution asked the court to detain the accused person at Central Police Station until they get results of a medical test conducted on the driver following his arrest on Tuesday.

Muga was arrested at a parking lot on River Road.

Onkwani ordered him detained for two days as requested by the prosecution before he processes Sh2 million bond granted by the court.
